E36 M3 vs VR6 vs classic sti
outcome? all standard of course, what do you think would win? i have a feeling an M3 would be the victor, but messin around with a VR6 once i realised that they are seriously quick. Never had a opportunity to race a classic - but reckon they could hold theyre own up to about 3rd... anyone?

I've owned a Corrado Vr6, and would have to admit that it would finish last in that particular race! Beautiful car and does pull well but aint a match for an sti or a similar engined bmw with at least 90 bhp more (depending on whether an Evo or not).
Believeable that the vrs would beat it to 70, but in all fairness the Corrado should edge ahead after that. Interestingly, the Corrado appears to be as fast as the golf r32...not surprising I suppose if 4wd losses are factored in.

Also recently owned a Corrado VR6, and still had it when I bought my MY00 classic UK turbo. Corrado made the turbo feel slow, but in all fairness I doubt it'd live with any of the above listed, apart from the Skoda, flat out. It felt very quick on the road though.

Dont forget the Corrado VR6 was quicker than the Golf VR6 as it was 2.9 litres versus the Golfs 2.8, think there was about 15/20 bhp difference in it, 170 ish for the Golf and around 190 for the Corrado.

Corrado (evo stats)
0-60 - 6.2
0-100 - 15.9 (iirc)
30-70 - 5.7
My mate had a 260bhp scoob and above 90mph up to 140 (can't remember if it was on my private road or when we were on a Autobahn in Germany I think ) there was nothing in it at all, maybe the Corrado was a tiny bit faster as I was creeping up on him. Mind you, at those speeds, power isn't so much the issue as aerodynamics. Up to 80/90 I couldn't keep up obviously but it wasn't miles behind by any stretch of the imagination.

I used to own a amd chipped 16v cupra sport putting out 175bhp. At gti international a couple of years ago i raced a vr6 golf up the quarter mile. I was quicker to 60 and had a overall quicker 1/4 mile. My cupra is no where near my classic sti.

I had a 96 Golf VR6, no air con, but the car on our companys weighbridge (calibrated every month) it came in at 1180KG!
I could not believe it, but the VR6 was in its element above 100MPH.

my mate had a m3 evo was great if the road was like a milk pond but if it was a bit bumpy it was crap along a particular rd we visit 120 m3 140 sti version 2 on the flat roads no difference twisties sti by a mile as for the vr6 the sound awesome but not even in the same league in my opinion

Having owned two of the three (VR6 and M3) i think i can comment. The simple fact is the VW would'nt live with the M3 at all but it was a fantastic car IMO. I bought it as a inbetweener and nearly ended up keeping it. As has been said possible the greastest handling fwd car barring the Integra type R

Fairly significant difference IMHO between Golf and Corrado VR6's. The Golf VR6 I've driven was really not that quick, handling wasn't over-impressive either, although it could have been getting a little tired by then. I'd have much more repsect for the Corrado, though.
P.S. Not saying the Golf is bad - it's quite decent for what it is - just that it isn't very close to STi/M3 for performance.
