They're so cheap nowadays that if you really fancy one it's worth holding out for a supercharged import model. Then you're easily in the low 6's for 0-60.
Bit of a small car for me when I was test driving them 4 years ago. Plumped for a Mk2 instead, way bigger and faster. For the record I thought the handling was superb - this was a Rev 1 Mk2 before they softened it up.

Have to agree with everyone else.
i have had two and they are a lot of fun. dont worry about absolute performance figures as they arent particulary impressive but the fun factor on these little cars more than makes up for the 'on paper' performance figures.
Watch our for rust on wheel arches and where front bumper attaches. also watch out for leaky T-bar versions.
Im 6' 1" and i have to admit i did feel a bit cramped but i couldnt find any other car (RWD) that was so eager to rev and to put a smile on your face for about £750.
If funds allowed i would have another in a shot (as a second car though).
The post '86/'87 cars are the better ones by the way.

Unfortunately after almost 20 years of >7,500rpm abuse there are a lot of lemons out there. If you drive one of these you really won't know what all the fuss is about. But, drive a good one with recent bushes and suspension and it will become immediately clear why Autocar rated them as better handling and faster down twisty roads than Ferrari 328s when they first came out!
Also don't confuse the Mk1 with the Mk2 - they are completely different cars. The Mk1 MR2 was designed by Lotus for Lotus (was to be called the X-100) before the designs were bought out by Toyota. A Mk1 drives just like a S1 Elise (a Mk2 drives just like a mondeo), but with higher revs, more power, leather seats, electric everything, decent build quality, reliability etc etc. It's only the extra weight that stops it from being a true Elise competitor in terms of straight line performance.
You can't argue with mid-engine and rear drive for less than £1000!
