They are pretty good cars all in all. There was an issue with the fuel gauge not working which results in a new thingy where the speedo/fuel/temp/rpm gauges are. The other gripe is the coil packs go on the 1.8T from time to time. Check with the dealer if it was recalled. In addition early cars (MY<99) needed rear spoiler and suspension alterations.
Other than that, pretty solid, although no 1st hand experience, but my mate had one for 3 years and seemed okay.
All in all i would suggest you check the basics out, and then see how it drives. LHD cars are sometimes FWD only, and check log books and chasis numbers to verify the model (180 / 225).
Hope that helps a bit.

Andy's right about the instruments. My girlfriend had one and also know others that have had the instruments pack up after 3 years, just after the warranty runs out. £600 to replace.
Other than that it was a good car.
Hers was an import, although i don't know of any differences.

There won't be many 'grey imports' around. I imagine 99% will be LHD. The one to look out for is the UK spec imports. I think the spec model is written on a little sticker in the spare wheel well. It is there on the golfs - not sure a TT has one !?!?
I would go for the rag top though, as the coupe suggests a hard core sports car, and it isn't, but the rag top looks a million times better IMO.
Good luck.

Suprisingly there is little or no difference between the prices of ragtops and hardtops.
Think the ragtops look okay in black but otherwise quite goofy with the roof up (ie. 90% of the time).
Perfer S2000s for ragtops but there are more damaged repaired than straight ones which is rather off-putting.

Additionally, we recommend you check ALL vehicles in used vehicle stock, and any

any coils with index D/G/H should be replaced with the newer version
Rod type ignition coils with index J or L are not defective and must not be
replaced.
Supply of Parts-
The required replacement parts should be ordered in the normal way
Parts-
Rod type ignition coils (1 to 4 coils depending on status of current fitted parts)

Iwas thinking that you would be able to ask your dealer for all 225 TT recals. They should provide.

Cheers for that mate.
It seems that the TTs suffer from broken gearboxes and many (expensive) electrical probs as well as cam belts snapping. Have gathered this from the people I have spoken to who have their TTs for sale.
Making me think twice thats for sure

Be careful mate. You read into these things too much and you will never buy anything. The TT is a very good reliable car. Keep it standard and there will never be any problems with it.

I spoken to a few people who have cars advertised. One had 50k odd miles and his cam belt went and along with it the engine. Another had done around 55k and had the gearbox go (totally). Many have experienced very common electrical probs (£700-800 to fix).
Does make one think.

You run an S2000 for a few months then sell it at the ned of summer, with an extra owner...you will be burning money!

just makes it easier to get her to buy one if its just for summer
Am struggling to find a well priced straight one though. MOST are accident damaged

Went to see a TT225. Absolutely mint condition. Couldnt find any imperfections whatsoever....not even a slightly kerbed wheel in sight. 30k miles, 2002, one owner from new, £16k. Lovely example of a TT and doubt there are many better....but I walked away uninterested and uninspired.

Hope you decide to keep it! Sounds like you want to!

Tiggs: Buy low, sell high....been done before
BigMan: Yes earlier ones had some stability issues but Audi just stopped short of re-calling them. Instead they offered to upgrade the suspension and add a rear spoiler FOC.
Just going for a test drive in a S2000.

Hi BOB'5 had a Audi TT 225 recently, after I sold my classic scoob, If the car is for your missius then fine if shes after a car that looks good, but if your after it for performance and driverbility youll find it very bland, and the power delivery is really smooth and not neck braking like the scoob.
But I did have one for 3 months and made £1000 profit on it, so it wasnt to bad if you find a good example.
Just look out for dodgy electrical stuff, as ive heard there expensive to put right especially anything on the dash, make sure the windows go a bit down when opening the doors and go back up when closed, Also dont be put off by high mileage cars with around 50k-60k as the 1.8T engine is very strong and are worth considering if you intend on keeping it for a few years, but if you intend to make money on it then find one with low miles.
Also there was a few things that i didnt like and that was no room and the gearchanges were really clunky and I hated the gearbox, also I didnt like the really thick A-pillar, and was really hard to see when you came to junctions. You should be able to find the right one, if you look in the auto trader theres loads for sale, and when I stuck my TT for sale, it was sold after half a day for sale. If youve got any questions just send me a PM, ill be happy to answer them.
