No auto M5,men only! Big six spd manual but clutch is a weak point!

They all had different trim finishes to order, alu, walnut ect. Most are alu finish.

Try and find an Alpina B10. This will have both of the above and is about on a par with performance.

I have an E39 M5......In answer to your questions :

Never been an auto E39 M5, 6spd manual only
Walnut trim was a no cost option I believe from late 2000 (facelift cars) onwards. In practice most cars have the titanium trim (my MY2000 car has) & is much much nicer IMHO, but any M5 is a nice car no matter what trim, it dosn't spoil how it drives !

Craig, I've owned 10 cars (including 2 scoobies) or various fast hatches and quite simply, the M5 is the best car I have ever owned. I don't use the M5 for commuting etc so I can keep the mileage (& therefore the petrol usuage ) sensible.
In general I average around 20 - 23 Mpg. Great to drive, but major respect is needed until you are used to the rear drive power before turning off the the DSC (traction control). Very comfortable over long distances. Performance is very strong (as you might expect!) but is very refined so you need to keep an eye on the speedo sometimes........
Very practical car too, has a big boot and loads of space, I have a family & it more than copes with all the people & clutter etc.

Check the BMW sites for loads more info, but in my experience it is vital to buy a car with the "right" options to ensure good resale. This means the Comms pack (phone, Satnav, TV etc) and also the Nappa or Heritage leather upgrades if possible. Also very important to try & find a car with the extended BMW warrany (many owners still pay to keep it going). This saved my bacon when my water pump failed and covers you for the known problems that can occur like Vanos issues etc.
Make sure you look at several, as some cars are real dogs and the extras can vary widely.

All in all, a great car, a future classic for sure.......

I'll second that about the M5 being such a great car, if i was forced to keep one car for the rest of my life then my M5 would be it!

Its ironic that i'm thinking about selling it though!
