205 Technical Question

205 Technical Question
The car is a Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI and have not owned the car long, but I have recently noticed that when idling in traffic the Oil Pressure needle rises towards the red. If I rev the engine it drops again or if I start driving again it drops away again.
All other temp guages are normal, would like a bit of advise that all is well, and is a normal occurence??
The car does have an uprated oil pump,as the engine has been tweaked!!
P.S. Thanks for the threads guys, this car is seriously fun and I am glad to have bought one.

Normally the oil pressure drops when idling in a 205 when warm (if I remember rightly the needle moves to the left). Is this what you mean?
If so, then no worries, what you describe is perfectly normal for an older 205.

You do get a bit paranoid in a newly acquired car.
Esp after first bit of rain the sun roof leaked.!! (Fixed it now though).
Just got to find out why the heater does not work and all should be well.

Oh the love of the first week of 205 ownership.
Pull sunroof handle, get covered in water
Turn heater on, cold air only in winter, in summer hot air only
Oil pressure guage that moves quicker than the rev counter
All part of the fun
Oil pressure should be between 1/2 and 3/4, 4 to 6 bar when warm running 4k revs. At idles it sits just above the red zone.
As long as no lights, be happy. Most french cars think its xmas every month.

Aggs, i got myself a little 205 1.6 gti as a 2nd car aswell, good fun arent they !!
Mine does exactly the same as yours, the hotter it gets and the more its allowed to tick over the lower the oil pressure and revs go.
After loads of advice from many sources, i decided to try and do something about it, so i :
1) Changed all spark plugs
2) Changed oil, making sure thick enough for the older engine
3) Changed fuel filter
4) Took off and cleaned aftermarket air filter
But the most important one, thats kinda done the trick on mine was to clean out all the breather pipes with brake cleaning spray and adjust the throttle cable to make it a bit tighter. This means that now when the car idles, it revs at 1000 rpm, and this tends to stop the oil pressure from dropping to low.
Plus the car goes well again.
Hope this kinda helps?

All pugs with an oil pressure gauge will start from the right and stay there at idle when cold, now when its warm it will drop to the left when at idle, just when its warm and running along the road and then it drops left you need to worry

Thanks for the replies.
I know from past experience that the idle does "hunt" a bit in traffic and driving slowly, this is normal and the revs can rise and fall a small amount if not correctly adjusted for idling this is normal and the character of the car and can be set up to avoid this.
I had a Citroen Visa GTI and 309 GTI in good few years ago and were similar in this respect,I had the Citroen chipped which took the "overrun "off the running of the car when lifting off the throttle and this did improve things if I remember correctly, but is not really neccessary.
The 205 is the Classic shape and am delighted to have found a good one.
As much fun,if not more than the Scooby, esp. once used to no power steering.
Although had to travel to Newcastle to get it!!

The air bleed screw (brass coloured thing attached to the metal air intake housing) can be used to easily adjust the tickover/idling. Good idea to remove it and clean it. Just make sure you remember the number of turns so you can replace it in the same/similar position.
Check the alternator if it's hunting at low revs/tickover sometimes a faulty one causes problems.

One of my mates has just done the same thing, gone from a 17k Lancia Integrale evo3 (minter) to a 1.9 205. He is currently running it on a combination of Avgas, octane booster and Optimax. Makes it do this quite a lot, and its rather good fun too. Daz

What brake upgrade did you do?
I have checked my pads and discs and need replacing, was going to use standard discs again as the car is mainly used on road and will tracked only 3 or 4 times a year.
But could be persuaded to something better, although the standard brakes feel really good.
I was just going to up rate the fluid,I have approx. 3 weeks to get car ready for its first outing, which will be at that little circuit in Germany!!! (The Ring)

You dont need huge brakes as the 205 is nice and light.
Best VFM is some ATE Powerdiscs and either Ferodo DS pads or Mintex - whole front setup should cost you about £90, and the discs are grooved and vented
They look like this:
Discs available from www.eurocarparts.com, about £20 each

i use a 205 as a road rally car and all i done to the brakes was change the fluid to dot 5.1, fit uprated pads and adjust the handbrake properly, the car now stops almost as good as my impreza and the brakes have never faded once on a event.

They're good, take a while to warm up but when they have they do stop the car very well
Having said that, I will be getting bigger brakes though once the engine is finished as it will be approaching 190-200bhp then

Mi16, rebuilt with a few choice bits, Emerald ECU and Suzuki GSXR throttle bodies. 180bhp is the more realistic figure, but the final target is 200bhp, if I ever get there
Spent the last hour (about 6 in total now) trying to shift a sheared torx bolt from the drivers seat - tried everything but it wont budge.

Just noticed that my old 205 GTi web site is still up and running - years after I left Freeserve! if you want to take a look ...
