My Mum had an 84 ( I think) 1.3 SR
I loved mine - H reg Black 1.4 SR

Sold it to get a Civic VTi (now that was a worthwhile performance boost ) 9 years ago

Funny though I remember it feeling quicker than 82 bhp would suggest. Still perhaps that was just because it was indeed quicker than my previous mini mayfair...

Had two - a H plate in white as above and a J plate facelift model with the better fitting but uglier bumpers, and the much better dashboard

Great cars (the dealer bought the first one back off me at 6 months old for what I'd paid for it, such was the demand)

Facelift car was by far the better of the two. Both were very capable.

Very, very tuneable and quicker than they really should have been.

The Nova Sport was, of course, the one to have

A mate and I used to autotest and sprint an F reg 1.3 SR. We stuck in a 1.6 GSI engine, put on decent suspension and stripped it out. It was the roughest looking nova in the country but used to p!ss all over the local boy racers, complete with our 1.3 badges and extra rust.

I desperately wanted one but could never afford.

They seemed quicker than the bhp suggests.

Man, happy days indeed.

They did indeed feel nippy and sounded quite distinctive too.

I remember borrowing a friends 1.4 and having so much fun spinning the front inside wheel in 2nd and 3rd around bends. The brakes weren't quite as much fun.

the 1400 SR is 72bhp. the SRi is 82+ bhp
they go pretty well as standard.
i fitted a ported 1200 head to mine with a 1300 inlet manifold and a weber twin downdraft carb and it went loads better that brought it upto over 90bhp for about £30
good cheap fun car , had 4 of the things now.

I had two 1.3 SR's. The first one (D plate) turned out to be a rust bucket under the skin. My second (F plate) was the face lifted one which was a big improvement over the first. Unfortunately at 94k it dropped a valve and was never the same again after the rebuild. The suspension had the complementary drop and a full PCS exhaust was fitted. It was bought with a Peco fitted which sounded crap. That lasted 3 days before i fitted the PCS which was sat in the gararge from my first SR.
There are still corners which the Scoob can't match in terms of speed, but then again i probably drove like a ***** in them days

Memories..

I had two SR's. First was a yellow E reg 1.3SR. My first "expensive" car: I worked and saved for a year to buy one. Everyone laughs at Nova's now, but at the time, demand for SR's was through the roof: I remember going down the newsagents as they opened on a Thursday morning and getting straight on the phone, only for all the good ones (and most of the crap ones) to be sold by the time I had finished work.

I eventually found a minter and got there first, but had to compromise on the colour.... Thoroughly abused it for over a year, put lots of miles on it and never put a spanner to it. Sold for more or less what I paid.

Second was a full hit rally car, a B plater done to Nova Sport spec. The full monty: twin Webers, Irmscher manifold, vindaloo cam, Quaife 5speed straight cut box & LSD, rear coilovers and discs, rose joints, uniballs, 13" RFX's etc etc. Wish I still had it.

Shame about the image these days. Remember the Nova has a great pedigree in rallying and competition, way more so than any RS Turbo or most other Chavmobiles on the road.

Was there any more to the 'facelift' than a different plastic grille?

10 years ago Phil and its a digital of a old fashioned picture crap quality i know, but you get the idea!

I'm fine mate, car running reliable at just under 400/400. One more mapping session needed to tweek the timing and a few other bits and hopefully get it to 420/420

had lots of them race/rally and road...........when i first started they were the mainstay of my business (tuning/modding for competition)...........

had about 8-10 pukka 'sports' thro my hands over the years........fairly poor as a std car without the optional cam (compared to where they should be).......but my own version had around 125bhp and c/ratio box (and sleeper exterior!!) - was quite funny was scaring the sh*te out of the gti brigade...........LOL

just on with tha last 'sport' i possess at the mo', full shell, engine, etc. rebuild........will have to go soon to make way for a mk1 escort rally project!!
