Default VW Golf R32

Was away looking at one last night
Got to admit i was really impressed, not the quickest but damn well built, the one i was driving had full leather & sunroof, & the rest of the usual gumph.
Only thing wrong was it was a 5dr or i would have been signing for my first finance deal in a while

So whats the good things about them ??

Do they really hold there money that well ??

This was a 53 plate with 14k on it, Garage was wanting 20.5k for it

And whats the bad things about it ??

Part from it not being Sti territory

Cheers

Stephen

Ps not looking to get into a silly debate like the last one did

My mate had one and loved it to bits but he said it supped juice like no other car he'd ever had. He has had a lot of BM's and VW V6's over the years. But then again it is a 3.2ltr.

ive just bought an R32. I part exchanged my MY00 impreza so i can give you first hand views on the R32.

Its a very well built car, especially compared to the MY00 impreza classic shape. i have full leather in my R32 and its great so easy to keep clean. it feels like ive gone up in the world, i didnt even have air-con in my scooby. i get climate control in the golf which i must say is superb and i dont know how i managed without it. The golf is a quick car maybe not quite as quick as my impreza but its not far off. you have to remember you have extra weight in the golf but it will never feel quite as quick because theres no turbo, but what you do have is so much torque throughout the rev range and lots less gear changes.the haldex works well so far (for me anyway) has kicked in when ive needed it. im averaging 22mpg at the mo and it keeps getting better everytime i fill up wiht optimax. theres also an ECU software update available through VW warranty to cure poor performance and hesitancy on some R32's. im booking mine in 2mo, i know somepeople that have had the update done and they say it transforms the car and improves mpg. some rolling road tests have shown 260BHP so fingers crossed and its free.

feel free to ask any questions, i will do my best to answer them.

Thumbs down

Being a Golf owner originally (1.8T) I opted to try the R32 and was extremely disappointed at the way it drove. The car understeered really badly and the groan from the exhaust was a nightmare in fact it gave me a bad head after only 60 min of driving furthermore a SEAT Cupra R was as quick in a straight line. I therefore opted for a Subaru as a great all round car.

R32 - 3 door in blue. Emmmm.....Nice

Would have had one....I was looking in 2002 when they first came out. At that time they were as rare as rocking horse s...t.

....so I went for an MY02 STi instead.

Scoob is a great car but sometimes wunda if I should have tried a bit harder to get an R32.

I'm an ex Scooby owner (9 of them) and an R32 owner. Now have the new Golf GTI. My biggest issue with the R32 is the lack of mid range grunt. The GTI is in a different league performance wise in the mid range. Sure the 0-60 and 100 dont show much difference, but in the real world I would take the GTI everyday.

Value wise, you can see the R32 droping now. The new GTI is going to hurt values and if you go on the golf forums, R32 owners are swapping for the new boy in town. It is starting to look its age and a bit Max Power

The new GTI is not perfect. No 4wd, but the extra chasis rigidity makes up. But not much will sound as nice as an R32.

I have just gone from an R32 to a 05STI PPP.

Performance wise, obviously the scoob is much much quicker.

The R32 was a nice car and the pro's and con's (IMHO) are as follows:-

Pro's
Nice looking stealthy car.
Very torquey low down
Loads of creature comforts ie climate, leather, computer thingy, satnav(opt) etc
Great stereo
Cheaper to insure than my scoob

Cons
Never felt quite quick enough
Ran out of steam at high revs
Boomy exhaust (once the intelligent flap opens)
Very harsh ride.
Xenons (set too low so limited vision)
Less room than scoob

Hope this helps

£20.5k does seem a bit overpriced but not too much - has it been recently serviced?

Having never owned a golf, i think they are a real gents car, not garish, but sporting and not fast but brisk. I think it is, as all golfs are, a classless commodity. Nothing said, nothing proven. It just is.

Whether you are at a track day meet, or celebrity dinner dance, it slides in unnoticed.

i would

Wait for the new Golf R34. I'm sure we'll get lots of reviews in comparison to the STI PPP as it'll be priced similar. 28k ish

Unhappy Dont buy R32

]I have an R32 but am getting rid in favour of Clio 182.Found the Golf to be heavy, not that fast(last car Type R much quicker)stupid on fuel, lots of flat spots in power delivery, generally dissapointing for the money!
