Smile I have become passionate again... with bigger 4x4's.

I am and will always remain passionate about the 'scooby' however some of you may know that I am selling my WRX because I need something a little less 'extravagant'.

I was thinking of the Toyota Hilux / Surf 2.4 model or something like the Mitsubishi Pajero/Shogun 2.5

I know the fuel is still going to bite, but nothing I'm not used to...

Any ideas, suggestions or if you even own one of these let me know.

I have been to the Pajero forums but they don't have the appeal that Scoobynet does...

Thanks in advance

Hi
I have a wrx and have now recently(3 weeks ago) purchased a toyota surf,or smurf as my mates have now named it.Its a 3ltr turbo deisel, fuuly spec'd elecy everything, climate, privacy glass,cd and mini disc it is silver and looks very smart.
I am well impressed with it,not fast but pulls like a train.I have used it for going fishing and have had to use the 4 wheel drive to get out from down our lake,no probs at all.
I have also done a couple of motorway runs and it was very quiet,it sat very comfortably at 90mph in od at only 3000rpm.
Highly recomend one, however i have only owned it for just over 3 weeks,so its early days.
I can also highly recomend the guy i brought it from,he has between 10 and 15 in stock always,he imports them himself and has been for years now.
I have learnt from various people the early 2.4's are to be avoided.
One last thing its worse than my scoob on juice and thats saying something.

Hi Mate!

When I followed you into the borough the other day and you pulled over at that junction, I thought I was in for a spanking or something. I was thinking "I don't remember doing anything to wind this bloke up!!" Then you peered round the open door!!! Phhhheeeeww! Hiding averted!!!!

Nice looking motor by the way "once I got over the moment" have you run anything over in it yet?

We won't talk about the football mate!!

p.s
You have a light out on the "uber smurf wagon", drivers side rear brake didn't work when you pulled up in front of me.

See ya soon mate

Wink Surf is my first choice

I have also heard about avoiding the 2.4 models... apparently something to do with the 'heads' go on them pretty quick?!?

What were your alternative choices and why did you choose the one you did. What kind of things did you have to look out for; will parts servicing and maintenance be reasonable?

They are very big with a lot of storage space at the back but you can't take this sort of monster in multi-storey car parks etc because of the hight...

When I sell my scoob, this will be the only vehicle at my disposal. I have heard that the diesel engine is no good for short runs, they have to be driven on long runs for them to last; is this true?

Sorry lots of questions all at once.

Thanks again in advance all...

Hi
1st yes i have a friend with a 2.4,head gasket went and he had only had it about 8 weeks.I dont know why they do it but having talked to a few specialists they all said avoid.
Alternatives were mitsi and range rover
I wanted something that looked smart and was fully spec'd,didnt want pick up and needed something i could take wife and nipper out in.
Couldnt find a nice mitsi and the rangerovers were all loads of money.
I made sure i brought from a dealer,This guy gives all his surfs full belt service before selling them.He has been importing just surfs for a long time and is well respected.
I have had to take peoples word for the fact that they are not bad on service/maintenance costs.
The one thing i was told is that the injection system can get problematic when they get 100,000 plus miles on them, and that there are only a hanfull of garages equiped with the correct diagnostics for the 3lt turbo deisel.
As for the height thing,i was worried about car parks, but i have been in 3 town centre multistorys and 1 airport multistory with no problem at all.
With all the seats down they are huge inside,i dumped a double matress no probs.
The short run question,im afraid i have no idea, not heard that one.

Remember i only had mine a little over 3 weeks,so im no expert yet.
Al i can say is im well chuft with it.
Oh yeah its a 1997 with 46,000killometers.

Wink That's given me more confidence...

Thanks for your info... it's been very useful and non biased as the surf forums may be...

Not to become a nuisance as such, but where did you buy your surf from?

Do you have the name of the dealer or a web address???

Thanks in advance

I'd opt for the 3.0TD surf...on the basis of the pure torque - you never need to change gear - just leave in 4th all the time

I had one of these for a year :-

Mitsubishi Delica 2.8 Turbo Diesel with Intercooler
Based on the Shogun/Pajero 4x4 but with Mega room inside.
Turned heads everywhere it went, nearly 7foot tall and surprisingly nippy for its size.

I own quite a few of these........the 2.4 Surf can be troublesome, the heads can crack, mainly because of people changing the water and not getting ALL the air out of the system, this creates a hot spot and trouble. The 3.0 Surf is much better, lots more power, no head probs, however heavy on fuel, but a nice drive. The best all round Pajero is the 2.8 SWB Auto unless you've got a large family then the LWB 2.8 is the one. 2.5 SWB is ok but a bit underpowered unless you've got a Manual, 22-28mpg is gonna be the best mpg you'll get. All depends on what you want from it as to what suits best?, The Lucida ain't a bad vehicle either.

Les1,

That's really good to know that you have owned the likes of the Hilux Surf and the Pajero... I initially was looking at the Surf 2.4 because it would be easier on fuel, however due to the Head problems I will steer away and take a closer look at the 3.0 Surf.

However. many have recommended the Pajero 2.8 also which I need to look at.

To be honest, I wouldn't really be going off -road but will have the potential to do so which may encourage me to do so. It's the size, ruggedness and comfort that attarcts me towards this type of vehicle.

Also, do they depreciate much or hold their value? What else would I need to keep an eye out for as I am no expert in engines (especially diesel) or large 4x4's. (For te surf or Pajero)

Thanks in advance

I currently own a Surf, 2 SWB and 1 LWB....................................

The 3.0 Surf really seems to be the most trouble free except for clicking of the wheels sometimes when turned, this only requires greasing to fix. They can still overheat though in very hot temps when towing, there's a fix for that, shouldn't really be a prob in this country............
The Pajero's hold their money the best, SWB or LWB there the most popular.
They ain't cheap, but, as you say they are built like a brick ^^^^ house!!
The only thing the 2.8's can suffer from are their fuel pump, the front pump seal can go which means they suck air and cut out, the fix, approx £250 to recon. Glow plugs easy to change and should be done for top starting, I'm sure you'll have picked all this up from the Pajero site? None of them will do very well on a Motorway though, the gearing is not quite up to "low revs at 80"
Make sure that the O/D works properly on Auto's or you'll have a very unpleasant vehicle to drive on a long straight....you should get O/D at approx 42mph and TC lock up at approx 48mph.

For the most fun, mpg, speed, the 2.8 SWB is the best.

On the surf...you may want to keep an eye out for the tailgate window controller, where the relays can go on the blink making it impossible to access the boot. (sometimes winds down, but not up, or vica versa)

A new controller costs a fortune (close to £200 IIRC). You can actually make a new one yourself for a few quid using 4 relays and wiring it in yourself - that is if you know what your doing

Otherwise pretty solid motors.

Only expereince I've had with shoguns is with the 3.0 V6 petrol (250000miles ) and that's only engine related problems (bloody spark plugs are a right PITA to get at + crack exhaust manifolds ) although not really applicable to you as your after a diesel. But I assume the rest of the drivetrain is fairly and body/electrical is similar to the diesel.

I have a SWB 2.5 Pajero and my other half a 2.4 Surf.

Nothing has gone wrong with the Pajero in 20 months of ownership, but unfortunately I am having to sell it, as I can't afford to run 2 vehicles anymore.

The Surf had to have an injector replaced a few months back. On average the Surf does about 70 miles every day and has been very reliable. The only thing I dislike about the Surf is the driving position.
