Audi S3 v Subaru Impreza
Has anybody had an experience with a re-mapped Audi S3 and what are the performance comparisons against a scooby modded or standard

chief, nwmark comes out with the smacs occasionally, and we always have to slow down to let him catch up
I don't think his is chipped though, also his brakes leave a lot to be desired after a few heavy stops
Not a bad car though.
You not got your new scooby yet?
chris.

I have had 4 Subarus and an S3 - The Audi is a superb car especially when it has been remapped - I had the Revo Technik remap at the car was producing 270 BHP and about the same in torque.
The Audi has superior build quality and the interior is positively lush compared to the Impreza. The running costs are cheaper as is the insurance - Even the dealers were good.
All in all if you can live with a 3 door car the Audi is a fantastic tool and very quick. The only thing to remember is that it is not a true 4 wheel drive car and when driving it only tends to kick in when the computer senses you are about to lose control.
I would have another though

Chris,
alright mate, i dont recall you ever having to stop to let me catch up and i do remember a run back across the cat and fiddle(?) just you and me and you couldnt get away (when we met the bikers and the rx7, then thingy?!?! caught us up at the lights in his Sti).
Mine is chipped and goes really well, although after a hard fast run the brakes do suffer, and you will get brake fade until they cool down a little. Although for most b road jollies there fine its just when you start having to slow from 100+ they get a too hot.
Performance wise id say theres nothing in it with a chipped S3 (265bhp and 280-300lb/ft) until the subarus start going over 280bhp. As from a standing start the S3 cant match the permanent 4WD capabilities of the subaru, so looses a little from initial launch whilst it gets the power to all 4 wheels. But in the S3's favour is less transmission loss once moving at higher speed.

I have just bought an MY03 wrx (no mods), and a work colleague of mine has just bought a chipped S3. Needless to say theres a bit of banter between us
We intend to have a look at the 0-60 times but when it happens is anyone's guess.
Im expecting it to be close but will let you know what happens

I have an S3 and my bro has a classic Scoob, his as peeps say is quicker off the mark, but the 6 speed box in mine allows it to keep up mid range, then upto 100+.
Comparing the 2 is little unfair, very diff' cars, the Audi is more refined A road, car where as the scoob is a better handling, better steered B road car.
We both love each others cars, and are happy with our own choices.

Had a little play with a standard S3 last night - they need a re-chip to keep up with my 03 WRX. In the wet I just had more grip everywhere and mine seemed to slide more predictably .....
It's like all things - PPP 03 WRX = 270 bhp S3
Sti PPP requires a heavily modified S3 to keep up!
Good cars - no doubt about it - but need big brake kit and big turbo to shine!

From a mate with a standard S3 (210bhp version), we both thought it was marginally slower than a standard bugeye WRX in a drag race. Now my WRX has >280bhp, it's not that close. Similarly, a 270bhp S3 will no doubt beat a standard WRX: simple physics - for similar weight etc, the most powerful car will win!
Driving the S3, it's well bolted together, and reasonably grippy, but IMHO it just felt solid, and wasn't much fun. Engine pulls well and smoothly across a wide range, which means that the 6 speed box with fairly short ratios seems a bit wasted IMHO - e.g. 3rd gear had run out before 80 IIRC.
I remember reading a head to head when the bugeye first came out. Negatives were Audi - lousy brakes, WRX - lousy fuel economy. WRX won the test as being a bit better to drive.
That said, the S3 is a bit more of a credible rival to things like 328i/330i BMW etc, whilst an impreza isn't, even if quicker than the BMWs.

My wife had one as a company car for a while, nice discreet yellow one with silver mirrors, and a nice yelow suede interior.
It was a Y plate not sure whether that is a 210 or a 225 version.
Pretty well bolted together, but i hated the drive to vague. I have a new a3 2.0 tdi as a company car now and that is even worse.
to much electric everything and no feedback. completely different animal to the scoob, but then if the S3 was modded as well probably a bit of a fairer comparison.

Ahh I forgot to mention, the car went back to the lease company after 9 months after 3rd gear destroyed itself (twice), it then needed a engine rebuild after letting itself go on the M62.
And it was not driven hard, guess she got the friday afternoon car.

I think ive heard enough!
It might be as ugly as sin but i think my next car will be a scooby
and besides i am not a fan of six speed boxes and having to change into
fourth at 80mph.
What i like about my mates Scoob (Gill95) is the way it has that midrange wallop in third from 30-40mph all the way up to a ton (on the autobahn ahem!)
pity really 'cos i like the look of the S3
