These are pretty reliable cars, as peugeots go, they rate very highly (the 306's) in reliability.
Things that can go wrong?
Glow plugs can go at around 60k, cheap enough to replace, and as long as they are serviced and have been looked after, they should go on and on and on

I had a DTurbo for about 14 months. Only changed it as i can't stop changing my cars!
It was 18 months old when i got it. I put 12000 miles on it and it started first time everytime. Good fun to drive with the lift off oversteer!

One of the chaps that works for me has one. I cant think of one major mechanical component that hasn't fallen off/broken/emptied its contents/siezed up/gone bang in the last 18 months... He has virtually bought himself a new car in parts ... failures include engine/gearbox/powersteering/brakes/electrical/fuel pump...

306 td needs careful attention to the cooling system. Head gaskets are prone to failure without warning, and they need to be repaired correctly, often requiring a head skimming to get the head and block to sit together again. Also pay attention to the heater matrix, they are a known weak point, usually due to corrosion. Clutches get stiff before they go, gearboxes are ok. Apart from that the only thing worth thinking about are the suspension sub frames, particularly the rear, listen for clunking over bumps, which also affects the handling making them more prone to oversteer. French electrics are more annoying than troublesome, expect something to cease working, but don't get upset by it.
