330d tuning - bigger turbo?
If you take something like a 330d and put a bigger turbo on it, improve the breathing and intercooling, any reason why you couldn't run about 300-350 BHP? Power band would be a bit narrower, but the 330d is quite wide already.

You won't really get big power numbers out of a diesel because they don't spin fast enough, so the only way you'll increase it is to up the boost as you say. Only thing is that 330ds already have a really high BMEP, and I'm not sure how much more the engine could take, or the gearbox for that matter. J

Why do they not run 369 lbft through the 3 like they do in the 7? Would the gearbox shred to bits?

The single turbo is running 369 lbft in some models.
The BMEP wouldn't appear to be as high as the chipped 1.9 TDis running 190 BHP and silly torque?
Could that autobox take the punishment?

We chipped my 325 TDS SE when I sold it, went from 145 bhp to 180 bhp but the torque increased to just over 300 ft/lbs. No change to fuel consumption and made the car much more driveable - you could drive in town @ 30 mph in 5th gear. Suggest you look on the Van Aakken website - they seem to be at the forefront of chipping diesels.

john, take a look at a few Yank websites for some info into diesel tuning, they use propane injection coupled with breathing mods, increased boost/intercooling and fuelling, although admittedly they concentrate on 7.4L V8 TDi units
I have a video of a diesel Ford F350 doing an 11.42 sec 1/4 @ 118mph, these things weigh around 3.5 tonnes so work out the power for yourself...

Yes, saw that F350 smoking along Will have a look at the US sites, they usually know what real power is about compared with the pussies over here
Thanks Kevin, don't see anything there about bigger turbos though, it is all the usual about just chipping them for +20% or so gains. Worthwhile, but not quite so captivating as proper big power

Have you seen last weeks Autocar / or was it Top Gear magazine???
Anyway for about a grand there is an ECU remap that gives it 260 bhp & 410 lb/ft. 0-60 under 6 secs and 160mph top speed.
That sounds good. Oh and what BMW don't cover under warranty this company will.

How old is the car? If it's an M57, that could explain the lower torque figure, as the 7 has the M57N engine. The 7 does not have the twin turbo unit, nor does the 5 yet, in this country anyhow...
