Default Merc A Class?

We`re thinking of getting a Merc A class & was wondering if there any top sites (like this) about them or has anyone got any tips for buying?

Cheers

Have you sat in one / driven one? I was keen as there were some great bargains on new ones at Motorpoint, but IMHO the interior finish & fittings are 1980s Fiesta quality ... hard shiny plastics and flimsy-feeling controls ... put me right off.

Wouldnt call them Fiesta material, not that great but come on, have you sat in an 80's Fiesta recently ?

The A class is a bit odd to drive and can be problematic, seems to have more than its share of suspension problems but the rest of it is ok.

I used to have one, but WOULDN'T recommend it.

Brilliant packaging and surprisingly good to drive (mine had the AMG kit on it)...until the steering column gives way.

Its a disconcerting feeling, to say the least, when your front wheels move independently of the steering wheel!

Check out www.baby-benz.co.uk and do a search for "knocking steering column" on the forum to see what I mean...

Edited to add: I had three (yes, count 'em 3) steering columns in 18 months - all under warranty thankfully, otherwise its about £900 a pop inc. labour.

I bought a new A class A170 from new. It was the worst car I have ever had and bearing in mind my first car was a Peugeot 104 costing £250 this is saying a lot.

The dealers were appalling and treated me and my wife like dirt and the car had problems with suspension, loss of power, brakes, squeeks rattles, electric faults, expensive servicing etc etc etc I had 10 times more faults with this car than any of ther other dozen cars I have ever owned new and secondhand.

The day I part exchanged it for a reliable Honda I breathed a massive sigh of relief.

Apart from that I'd recommend one

The GF has a A190, seems all right to me, apart from what I feel is lack of braking power. Goes quick enough.

My mates just sold his. It was in the dealers for faults on a regular basis. £400 for a service too.
He had to get rid when the warrenty ran out, it would have bankrupt him.
