My taxi last week was an A8, watch out for the telephone, it took the driver way too long to find the button answer it. Other than that, huge boot, nice ride.

The 4.0 diesel is the pick of the current range - better than the 6.0, by all accounts. Haven't driven the 6.0, but the TDI is genuinely quick, and reasonably involving to punt around, albeit bigger than a very large thing.

What A8 are you talking about?

The current model or the previous one?

If its used, make sure it has no accident damage, they are a nightmare to repair correctly, as the aluminuim construction makes it more tricky. Otherwise they are good value compared to others available, incredibly well screwed together, reliable, and look great to boot.

Depreciation is truly biblical - get the old shape one with all the toys and a full history and you may never need to buy another car again - however, if anything major is on the blink you may be forced to sell your children to sort it out. The 4.2 Quattro is very quick, the S8 a monster (though a bit stiff if you are after super luxo) - the 3.7 is a nice compromise. Lots of kudos - not in your face like a 7, boring like a Lexus LS400, predictable like an S Class... though teetering on being a bit Fiddy Cent in the wrong colour/alloys.

Agree on the accident damage thing though.

Isn't this classed as most expensive mass production car to repair and maintain in the world ?

I'm looking at an older 4.2, preferably with an lpg conversion. So no depreciation to worry about! The reviews I have seen appear to rate it as pretty reliable with no recurrent faults. I guess the Insurance will be on a par with the Impreza, fuel about 20mpg (more with lpg), not sure about servicing costs though?

Seem to be a few out there, mostly with full Audi SH and no accident damage.

Used to have a Saab 9000 Aero with all the toys, the 9-5 Aero isn't a patch on these though, so I thought a 4WD A8 might do the job. Speed, comfort etc.
