History:

This car is one of just two street-legal cars built by Porsche as pre-production prototypes based on the 1996 GT1 racing cars, those racing cars having been entered during that year by out works' team and by customer teams at le Mans and in various FIA-sanctioned races.

These two cars were technically the precursors of a series of twenty street-legal 1997 911 GT1 cars which were later built with different exterior styling, and sold to private buyers. The two versions of the GT1 can be distinguished by their head and taillights. The 1996 cars used light units from the 993 version of the 911, whereas the 1997 cars incorporated the units from the then-new 996.

The specific car in question was used initially in the development programme for the subsequent series, and later as the only press car and as a demonstration vehicle for test-drives with prospective buyers. It was eventually bought from Porsche AG by Talacrest 2000 in July 2000, The car is being offered for sale once more.

snip at £395,000

So, Carrera GT or one of these?

Proper Porsche indeed.....

I wonder how fast I could get that to go around the 'ring?

At one of the RMA days at the ring last year, someone actually drove one of these around. As they are so rare it may even have been this one.

Carrera GT ... without question IMHO.

More modern - always will be more dynamic and ultimately faster and more rewarding than a car that is nearly 10 years old (however good it was in its day).

GT1 - as a collectors car may be the right decision - but as a drivers car the GT gets my vote.

I'd have thought as a drivers car the GT1 would be the choice - it's a proper "racecar" marginally toned down for road use - the Carrera is a road car first and foremost and has to appeal to everybody, from race drivers to fat american playboys, so has some degree of softness to it.
