Default BMW 330d compared to 99

How does a BMW 330d manual compare to my standard MY99, 0/60 0/100 & top end , I think these are really quick motors am I right.

0-60 and 0-100 i think the scooby would win hands down... however after 100 and in gear acceleration i think the scooby would be matched if not bettered. espessially if its just had a simple remap! apparantly they make loads of torque, which is always handy

No comparison the MY99 will do 60 in low 5, 100 in mid 14 and 120 in 24secs. Where you might get a shock on the road is if you're caught off boost or out of gear. Big diesels pull in most gears from low revs so will get the jump on you.

They are quick, but not scooby quick.

Just as a point of reference my relatively standard UK my97 (just decat and filter) timed an averaged 0-60 in 5.1sec with 3 people and 1/2 tank of NUL.

Work the rest out yourself.

What the 330d will be better at is a daily driver, much more lazy, don't bother changing gears all the time and let the tourque do the work

I raced one round the mountain section of the Osle of Man TT circuit in the summer in my standard MY99, he was 4 up and i was 2 up. I had no problem whatsoever staying with him but getting past him was a nightmare. I had to redline it in every gear and finally managed it, i think because his passengers were giving him grief and telling him to slow down.

$hitloads of torque on those things, deffo not a pushover!

if I had to go sensible (and could afford it) I would have a 330D.. maybe a poor man's M3.. but cost effective and not a shabby motor at all

My Old 330D with a tuningbox on it kicked out 245bhp and 380lbft and did 60 in just over 6 so not slow by any means...

Yes but why do we buy a Subaru? Does a 330D or Golf TDI or whatever sound the same or offer the same smiles per mile? Sometimes driving a fast car is more than sheer speed.

Was that reliable and was the only mod a tuning box? The early 330ds were 184bhp so taking that to 245bhp from a box of tricks seems a little unrealistic!

If it had a real 245 it must go like **** off a stick! Any idea on its 0-100 with that spec?

Yes it was reliable and yes the Tuningbox was the only mod, but as the car was a 204BHP model to start with 245 is quite realistic.

and it did go like stink, in all gears. From what I found an umodded 204 bhp car did it in around 17 so a modded car would do it even faster.

Still got my 330d (204bhp) and loving it!

In comparison with a 99 Impreza, there is less in it than Subaristi would like to believe. I remember a blat on the Autobahn with a modded MY00 Impreza on the way to the Ring. I was in my old 184bhp 330d and there was nothing in it. On the mountain twisties, it took a very bold (read stupid ) overtake to get past.

The new car is considerably quicker and I'd say that it would be very close with a MY99. Mine will do 0-100km/h in 6.7secs, and recently a standard car has done the quarter in 13.9. I'll try and dig the article out.

I bought a 330d sport auto last week,got to say it's probably the niceset car i've ever driven,makes me fell like selling the scoob but my heart wont let me.Pulls like a train from the lights with the auto box,you would have to give a manual some stick to stay with it.Will be having a Superchip fitted this week sometime so will let you know what the difference is....Alan......

Lovely car mate - I've been looking at one of these to replace my '03 WRX - been quoted up to 265bhp and 440lb/ft torque .......

What MPG is everyone getting from the 330D's? I have a client with one but reckons he struggles to get mid 30's from his I did fancy one until then as I really need at least 40mpg if not more. If, as has been posted above, you can get mid 40's then one of them is very much back on the agenda

Merc CLK 270 CDI also a very nice car, not as quick but lots of torque nice interior and I reckon looks very good as well

Mine averages 41-42mpg. It's a manual. The automatics can be up to 15% thirstier, depending on how they are driven. I never get less than 500 miles from a tank. Costs the same to fill as an Impreza. You do the maths! I did, and I'm in a BMW! LOL

You'll see upwards of 45 mpg on the motorway at a cruise controlled 90 mph. Nice. Even doing a steady 130 mph in Germany still returned over 30 mpg.

As with Matt mine was a manual and the tuningbox did nothing to harm the econemy. With the majority of my driving being motorway at 80(ish) I was easily getting 500+miles a tank.

The only reason I got shot of it was BMW UKs and their dealer attitude when I reported a brake problem in the wet which they deemed to be "normal behaviour"...no brakes the first time you press the pedal when its raining is pretty scary...

Jenson Button was fined 5,000 French francs ($699) after he was
caught speeding on a French motorway at the weekend.

The 20-year-old Button, who is in his debut Formula One season

speed of 230 kph in a BMW 330 diesel car on Saturday.

Until he is 21, the Briton is allowed to drive only diesel cars in

Steve,

I think that the brake issue is due to the ducting that draws air from the front bumper to the disk/caliper area. Mine does it occasionally, but full feel is restored almost immediately. Don't see it as a major downer though.

Thats where yours and mine differ Matt, the braking force didn't return at all, regardless of how long and how hard you pressed the pedal. The only way to get it back was to lift off and reapply, and you can image in an emergency situation that this wouldn't exactly be practical...and having a 2 month old baby I wasn't willing to take the risk, hence me no longer owning the BMW.

BMW UK and the dealer were to but it bluntly useless...I now own a Legacy Sport Tourer 3.0Rn and have had no problems at all. The dealers also understand the term "Customer Service".

I experienced this problem and was worried too, but did some testing and have reassured myself that under an emergency stop situation full braking power is available almost instantaneously, whereas when braking gently a reapplication can be required. Interestingly, the manual refers to the need to "dry" the brakes in wet conditions.

As for the driving experince, I would say a 330d is the ideal car for someone looking for something sensible after an Impreza...like me

In fact I have had 2 Imprezas but I like the Beemer just as much, there's no way it's as fast maxed out but the in gear accelaration and punch from low revs is phenomenal. There's a fair amount of stuff on this thread about 0-60 and 0-100 times but in all honesty they are not geared for performance figures (2 gear changes to get to 60 for example) so the figures do not reflect how fast the car feels when you drive it.

As for dealer service, my dealer is just fantastic whereas the dealer I used for the scoobs was distinctly average so I guess it depends on the individual dealer.

The only down side to the car I think of is the treatment you get from other road users, and of course all the w4nky threads on forums like this about indicators etc, hardly worth worrying about then

Oh, and mine does 40mpg driven hard, 45+ crusing

Chaarl,

Mine hasn't got indicators! LOL

I've had two Scoobs, a Skyline and an M5. I have to say that the 330d is the most accomplished all rounder. I'm on my 3rd one, and can't see myself changing it in the near future. I've saved a fortune in fuel bills, insurance and servicing.

As you said, the 0-60 time requires a change to 3rd. Still, 6.7 secs to do that increment is hardly slow. I just love the midrange wallop, and the fact that on the motorway, the mpg needle rarely moves right of the 50mpg mark! You'll know what I mean!

They are a great alternative to an Impreza. Just a shame they cost so much in the first place. Having said that, residuals are high. I've had mine a year, and if I sold it tomorrow, I'd effectively have just lost the VAT on it. Nothing more.
