Default Mobil 1 0w-40 on a turbo car

Hi all, just wondering is this a good grade of oil for a turbo car?... im going to change the oil on my brothers punto gt, its got only 19,000 miles on the clock and is in a1 mechanical condition....

I was under the impression that a turbo needs good protection from cold starts and beeing 0w this would be ideal? is this correct?... I didnt want to use a thick oil as the car has so low mileage!

thanks

I used 10w 40 Shell Helix in mine as i do alot of short journeys during the week. So i went for a thinner oil as its better suited to cold starts as you suggest, and would get upto temperature for the trips i am making.

0-40w is the recommended oil for VAG 1.8t cars, including the 180 and 225 engines, so i presume it must be okay for turbos.

The correct grade for your car is 5w-40.

The difference is that 0w has to flow at -35 degC and 5w at -30 degC.

Stick to the manufacturers recommendation unless the car is heavily modded and running very high engine temps, if this is the case, use 10w-50.

See the thread "lubricating the subaru", there's plenty of info there.

Cheers

Too thin, the slightest bit of wear on the turbo seals (even at 19k) and it will chew through the stuff.

Sorry disagree, loads of Oem's from VW, Ford to Porsche recommend 0w or 5w oils.

In fact the handbook recommends 5w-40 for all year round use.
