XC70

Don't really see the point unless you need the increased ground clearance. The V70 AWD is more or less the same is it not?
Still to test drive a V70 D5, but seems to be the choice of the range.
Prefer a Legacy estate to be honest, but have got used to the bootspace of a E-class, and neither the V70 or the Legacy can match it

I owned a V70 D5 (just normal; front wheel drive) for 22,000 miles.
A seriously well-rounded machine. One of those cars that does the job it was designed for with minimal fuss, and lots of comfort. There's nothing about it you want to tinker with.... everything just works fine (and the 13-speaker Dolby Pro Logic II stereo was a blast..... made the doors wobble... )
Average MPG was about 42. That's with VERY enthusiastic driving.
Frequently saw 49 on longer motorway trips.
The downside: front tyre wear!!!! Set of 225/45/17 P6000s every 6000 miles if you drive it hard.
Have heard the XC70 is a bit wobbly.
Would DEFINITELY go for the D5 AWD if I could have another.... would happily sacrifice 5-6mpg to get rid of the "front wheel scrabble" (due to 253lb.ft!!) which was really irritating in the wet.... traction control light on a LOT of the time.
Mind you, I belive the Volvo AWD system is more or less FWD all the time; or 80:20 or summat.
Lovely big cars if you can live with the image
AND..... with the DREADFUL resale values for a modern turbodiesel..... partly fuelled by certain dealers offering pre-reg ones.
(Mine was 27k on the road new, best trade-in I could get at 1 year old was 18.5k, and that was against a 32k new car )
Anyway.... I could rabbit on all night.... sounds silly, but there I things I miss about it compared to my MY04 STI.... Like the ability to put bikes in the boot

Still not as big a loadspace as my 1991 E-Class estate though - which is why I'm not sure about a V70
Saying that, dealer seems to have plenty of pre-registered 04 reg D5's for £19995. Facelift model out soon.

What about the Audi Allroad? You can get a 2.5 TDI version. Big estate car, lots of room, increased ground clearance and it looks better than the Volvo! Similar price I guess too.

I agree the XC certainly is better looking than the standard car, it also tows very well.
The missus would not let it go, she likes the volvo a lot, and probably will buy another.
Our dealer has been extremely good, even replacing all four brake discs at 45,000 miles under warranty, including fitting, all we had to pay for was the cost of the pads, so earning themselves good customer loyalty.....sumo

Auto XC70 D5, 02 plate, 25k miles.
Not a bad motor, the plastic is a bugger to keep from going white. It's OK to drive, but it won't set the world alight in performance terms. Reasonably economical though. I actually quite like it. Engine is a bit agricultural, IMHO. Great for towing.
Have had quite a few problems with the auto gearbox and with the driveshafts / diff, all fixed under warranty.

I think Volvo's are great, and the D5 is a super engine and yes i would love to have an all road - Never driven one but they are tuneable if it is of interest -
