Volvo XC70 Cross country
I'm thinking of having a look at a Volvo Xc70 D5, i currently drive a ST TDCI Mondy, so it's hardly as if i'm worried about boring cars, the pug gti on twin 40's satisfies the lunatic side of my driving. (all within speed limits of course).
I fancy a big load lugging estate, hopefully the d5 is reasonably brisk with decent MPG.
Any thoughts or experiences on them??

Chris L i don't suppose you noticed MPG when you were driving? and whether it pulled when booted. The ST even though boring does pick it's skirt up and hussle along when required.
Not sure about being classy, i just like cars that are a bit different, though i have no interest in the giant 4x4 like the X5 etc, this seems to be a nice middle ground.

I had one as a hire car once. Mpg wasn't particularly good at all, i was surprised how poor it was for a diesel actually. I really liked the car though, good engine, sounds a bit like a petrol V8 when pushed. To be fair, I didn't expect to like it, not my thing at all. I'd completely recommend one.

My wife has one, and we use it as the main family car. Auto transmission a bit sluggish and steering feels a bit overassisted around the straight-ahead to me, but still enough feedback to make good progress. Luggage area not as large as you might imagine without the seats down. Comfortable for long distance runs, where you should see 45mpg. 35mpg is what we get around town. Performance is OK, but it's not quite on a par with a 530d.

Thanks TopBanana, i've had a few people keep recommending a 530d estate as i have no real reason for 4wd, other than the fact i fancy it and i suppose there might be 2 inches of snow for 4 days of the year around dundee.
Best get off my **** and go comparing

I've got one as my regular get me to work car
MY2005 (54 plate) XC70 D5 SE
So thats the 163bhp version Euro3 engine, not the slightly more powerful 185 bhp Euro4. 6 speed manual.
130,000 miles so far and on the whole it has been reliable. It had a clutch slave cylinder fail (replaced clutch at same time) and so did the ECU. Other than that N/S wheel bearings & a couple of small warranty things.
I do 140 miles or so a day. 4 miles rutted road, 8 miles London back-streets and the rest is either d/carriageway or m/way. I would say that my d/c & m/w speeds are "high" and I return about 40mpg. Less heavy foot would produce better obviously. Have seen 46mpg. I also love the torque that the engine produces, great for overtaking and m/ways. Not many run of the mill cars can out-pace but thats the benefit of a 2.4L engine gainst a smaller one. Guess talking repmobiles here
Comfort is excellent, not at all tiring to drive 100s of miles in one go. Good stereo! It can also really hustle if you know how the car handles. OE tyres last me 40K+ miles. Tows the scoob happily to/from events.
Would I get another? Yes I would. It's also quite unassuming & not that common on the roads which I like.
