Sorry if this is a stoopid question, but what does Trans Am refer to? Is it a Pontiac-specific "brand", or is there more to it than that?

I suppose you know what FedEx stands for too, right??
Yes, yes, yes, we all *know* it stands for Trans America. But what's that got to do with the price of bacon? Does it denote something about the car's performance, it's heritage, or is it just a "badge"? Somebody must know!

I heard bacon prices plummeted after the trans am came out. The big fat American owners couldnt fit into the trans am on their diet of bacon on waffles, so steak and chips breakfasts grew in popularity instead.
This caused Bacon sales to drop significantly, causing the closure of many of Americas more prominent bacon farms, and its taked over 30 years for the market to settle down again, so I think you'll find the trans am badge has quite a lot to do with the price of bacon!!

Yes, but they put it on waffles!! I actually had that once, not even in America, in that cr*p hole South Africa of all places!!
I went to an ordinary restaurant, and looked over the breakfast menu, and saw an American breakfast, and it was fried egg, bacon, mushrooms, etc, like everything, and you got a waffle, so of course I ordered it thinking the waffle part was the desert afters, but no, it came with all of that on the waffle!!
Sent it back, very politely explaining I hadnt realised what it was, didnt mind paying (SA money is worth about the same as Monopoly money anyway), and they bought back two plates, one with the breakfast, one with the waffle, but all they'd done is scrape the stuff off the waffle and brought it all back!!
Needles to say I didnt eat it...
Sorry for the OT, but it did contain reference to bacon, and America, which are relevent to trans am, so hopefully that makes it okay.

As far as I'm aware it generally means that the car is a badly engineered, wallowing POS with an engine that's to powerful for it's prehistoric driveline

Badly Engineered? Well they use "old" technology, but the last model had a 50,000 mile service interval, so can't be that bad
Wallowing? No, very hard, infact some were too hard
Engine too powerful? No, for most of the life of the T/A it was under powered and strangled by emissions regulations
Camaro's, T/A's and Corvette's are better than most people think, I drove a Camaro IROC Z28 and was amazed by the handling and the grunt of the thing. Totally different to a Scoob, but still a wieldy peice of kit if brave enough

Camaro Z28s can be had quite cheaply now (~£8k). Jacques Villeneuve used to drive one
It's a detuned Corvette engine (280bhp in the Z28, 350 in the Corvette) and at 5.3 litres that makes it around 50bhp/litre which is rather unstressed! 40mph/1000rpm in top too, IIRC
