Default Lotus Elise S1

Anyone moved from a classic Scoob to an elise?? How does the insurance compare?

Via a CTR. The CTR and the Scoob were about the same in insurance. The CTR and a normal standard Elise are about the same in insurance. The different models, like the Sport 135 quickly become very expensive, over 50% more than a normal Elise!

Funnily enough I was doing this last night to compare new postcodes as I might be moving - I compared my STi Uk to an Elise S2 135

Through Tesco it was about 1500 for the Elise and 1300 for the Scoob (paying around 800 currently for the scoob), with Elephant.co.uk it was about mid 800 for both with value at 22K, driveway parked, 9 yrs no claims etc.

Damn i was hoping it would be less to insure than the Scoob. Not going to be a viable change then, even if its easier on tyres and brakes for trackdays.

**** as they say!

Our Impreza costs virtually the same as the Exige with the same insurance company (Tesco), same NCB year after year.
Both come out at about £700, so that quote above for the 135 was ridiculous...

Our old S1 135 was significantly cheaper to insure than the Scoob. (WRX that is)
Old shapes were always more expensive to insure than the WRX for me.

So you ought to be able to insure an Elise for significantly less than your Scoob.

AH that's more like it.

Scoob is my weekend car, and much as i love it i was hoping to reduce costs by chopping for an Elise (at least for the time being).

That or get rid of both cars and have just an S2000.

Oh to win some money...

I should have thought the elise was much cheaper to insure than an impreza, just goes to show!

Who was that with. I was insured with Tesco on the CTR, they wanted a tracker, but no extra premium for a normal S1 Elise. They wanted double for the S1 135 with tracker. I am under 30 though, and a few places said they wont insure me on the 135 because of that.

Although if I just gave them the number plate of the car, and ask them to insure it, it would be less, as it comes up as a Lotus Elise, with no indication of it being a 135.

Always been with Tesco.
My Elise S1 135 was a couple of hundred less than the Impeza WRX.
Like I said, the Exige is the same as the Scoob, (no tracker for either)
I was under 30, and my wife was only 20 (insured as well)

(Wasn't an actual "135" mind, was a standard S1 with the 135 conversion. Don't see how 135 could possibly be double the premium of a normal Elise. They must have screwed up somewhere.)

New customers have to get trackers at Tesco now.

Odd anyway, I cannot get a quote for less then 50% more than what I paid on the Scoob, on the 135!

Yup, on Tesco it did ask which tracking device was being used - only for the Elise though not on the scoob....

I thought I heard a rumour that Elises were expensive to insure as they may need a (costly) full re-tub after a comparatively minor accident?

Wink

I had an S1 Elise last year, only mods declared were a pipe and filter, and I thought it was dirt cheap to insure. Only cost me around £750 fully comp, and I was 26 with 4 years no claims (no convictions). As for the comment about tyres/pads etc, I really could not belive HOW good/cheap the elise is to run. Because it is soooo light, it is very easy on brakes, and ok on tyres(unless you really track thrashing it), and the fuel economy is awesome,
(on average driving) as good as my 2.0 HDi Pug. Comparing it to a scooby is hard for me nowadays, as I aint had one since 1999, and at 21 was only paying £1250 for a 280bhp WRX.

Andy,

Have a chat with Richard Askew - he used to have the Tango-mobile. IIRC, Squizz, T5NYW etc know him quite well

I'll message him, but didn't he have it as his main car? If i had one it would be because its a cheaper alternative to a weekend/track scoob i have now, and i've never had a topless car (must have some hairdresser genes in me )

Yes

Mine is my only car aswell, my only critism is the top end speed for the 120bhp version, as it hits a 100 that is about it, it will slowly chug along to 125 ish, getting there is great fun, as is corners, braking, and roundabouts are a right hoot.

Driving with out a roof is something else 14 months and the novelty hasnt worn off, rain, sun, snow, fog, its been off in all weather

You must take it on track thou, they are quite unbelievable.

Ditto about how soft it is on brakes, tyres, and the fuel consumption is pretty good, even on track. Ditto about it being fun, and even more so on track.

Thanks all! Seems to be a better 2nd car for me, compared to what i pay for the scoob, and would allow me to do more trackdays

Not sure i could live without the flat 4 soundtrack tho

You won't have to... Fizz only lives around the corner and you always hear him departing/arriving!

You could always join me on the "Darkside" and get a tasty Nissan S13 200SX... LOL!

There's a scoob at the end of my road too

I'd forever be buying rear tyres for track if i had a 200SX, as i wouldn't be able to behave!
