I would agree with the Fiesta - we had an old B reg Ghia for quite a few years - 1.1, did 130,000 miles with no probs (it didn't like the damp, but new plugs/leads and silicon sealer before the winter sorted that)
Cheap parts and servicing too

Don't listen to any of them!
Get a 205 or a MK2 Golf. A 205 xs would be perfect, fun to drive, cheap tax and cheap to run
Vauxhalls and Fords rust too much, the 205 or the golf won't and parts are cheap through German and Swedish or Euro Car Parts.

I'm quite interested in this, as i do 80 miles a day commute.
The trouble is insurance. I've got 3yrs NCB on my scoob, but if i get a quote even for a 1.25 fiesta its £1200 !!!!! (because no ncb on other car). Any ideas?

The only one I recon is the good old nissan micra. (From the people that brought you the skyline)
I always have one as a second car.
You can park it anywhere - no one wants to steal it
It costs almost nothing to insure
The police don't notice you doing 45 in 40 unlike if you are in an Evo with a big fin.
It runs on fumes.
It usely has been driven by an old lady for the past 8 years doing approximately 2,563miles per year. So it needs a new exhaust but the engine is as tight as the day it was new.
It has no cam belt but a timing chain
It is over engineered, it just keeps going. I do a 1,000 miles a week in mine, week in week out and service it every 10,000 miles.
You won't pull women in it, but it is the daddy of cheap, naff looking, reliable, bubble car a to b motoring.

You must be over 25. NCB is not taken into account.
I insure my old Golf GTi runaround this way (and 2 other cars), £280 a year fully comp. I am 29.

go for the fiesta!
i have an M plate 1.6 16v ghia, cost me £500 with 90,000k miles on.
great little car for the cash in my opinion.
i have always had a second car(runabout) and had a veriety of makes but for £500 there isnt much can touch a fiesta in this department!

If you want a reliable cheap commuter car I can only recomment Jap cars tbh, Corolla, Sunny, Civic, maybe Primera or similar etc.
Parts are slightly dearer but you don't need them as often as the Euro stuff

had the very same dilema up till three weeks ago, i got a 1992 peugeot 205 1.8 diesel 3d, 6 months MOT for £381 on ebay. does 400miles per £30 tank! not a spot of rust anywhere great little run around.

I have much experience in shi77y bangers, have had the lot, best was a Peugeot 309 1.3 look, didnt rust, sounded like a bag of hammers but kept on going, was still quite tidy considering the mileage (115k) and age (13 years). DOnt bother with old Fords or Vauxhalls, Metros either, all rusty old crap. 205 the other choice as Steve said above, mate has a 405 that has done 150k and its still not a bad car, dead comfy and very cheap to run.
Who said Panda's ?

Old Honda Civic, the square back hatchbacks or newer, H,J,K regs, very cheap, quite nippy, even 1.4GL 16v feels swift, very, very reliable, economical and relatively comfy....
