205 advise (with MI16 conversion)
As their seems to be a number of 205 owners here I thought I would ask some advise.
I am going to look at a 205 with an MI16 conversion in the Burnley/Nelson area (end of the M65). I am looking for a garage (pref. pug specialist) to have a look over the car and give me their opinion. Does anybody know anywhere in the near area?
Alternatively if any of you guys have the time I am sure we could come sort of financial agreement.
Cheers
p.s. Also if you have any pointers for me as to what to specifically look for it would also be appreciate.
Thanks in advance

Miles, when you going to look at it?
I live in the next town to Nelson and currently drive a 205 Mi16 so could help you out if required, being on my third 205 now.
I use a local garage but hes not much cop - could have a think of a few more though.

hey miles,
do you know the full details of the car ? there are many ways of converting to an mi16, some of them not as good as others. Make sure the rear beam is in good order, as this can be expensive (relatively) to sort.
What u planning to use the car for then ? mine's a dedicated track day car, I love it!

PS Miles, its not the red E-reg one is it with rear spoiler?
If so I was following him the other day in mine, didnt realise it was an Mi16 - young lad with baseball cap and bird. I waved to him (was right behind him) but he ignored me then booted it through my village well over 30mph as I turned off
For an Mi16 it seemed fairly slow compared to mine and sounded naff.
You should check some of the converted ones out on 205gtidrivers - you need to buy one from an enthusiast really, and a phase 2 if poss - H plate onwards.

Miels - second DW's comments above - there's a really nice miami blue Mi16 for sale on 205gtidrivers right now - tho it's in Scotland.
Can't get the link at the mo' as the forum seems to be down?
You do have to be a bit careful on Mi16 conversions - who's done it, using which engine, whether using Mi16 loom or original 205 dizzy, etc etc, but loads of info on 205gtidrivers, also CCC magazine ran a series on Mi16 coversions, plus also look at this....

and pugspares have some parts info as well

The Miami Blue one for sale started off life with one of the guys off Scoobynet, username Scotsman.
He bought it as a mint 1.6 then Kev-G did the conversion up in Scotland. He then sold it to Dave off 205gtidrivers, and he is now selling it, but now called Dave2.
It is a very nice example and worth the money. I paid a lot for mine but it is mint, the engine needs work but i have the history of it now at least - mine was done by taffycrook down in Wales who is one of the 205gtidrivers lot. I would advise buying a mint phase 2 model and paying that bit more - £2k should get you a lovely motor.
The red one you are on about looked OK if you like the max power look - spoilers, big exhaust, big wheels, colour coded arches etc. IMHO standard is the way to go with subtle mods.

lol, I must be famous...people on Scoobynet are talking about me!
Its me with the Miami Blue one for sale...the link is here...

On the down-side I think the valve stem seals are needing replaced now, which I will do before sale as Im getting a wee bit of smoke now, despite compression readings being good.
Im located near Aberdeen though so probably a bit far for you.

Miles,
that miami blue pug looks good value actually, even though with a little head work needed.
The spec of mine is now:
- 205 GTi, was a 1.6 now has an mi16
- Front Brakes upgraded to HiSPec Racing 4 pots with Mintex 1155 pads..absolutely the business!
- Rear beam refurbished recently with thicker Torsion bars (21mm)and ARB (23mm). I have plans to change both items for even stiffer ones soon
- Rear drums replaced with Discs and mintex 1155 pads
- Gearbox reconditioned and swapped the 1.9 box for a 1.6 with mi16 final drive
- Quaife ATB LSD
- Rollcage, Sparco seats and harnesses
- Completely stripped out inside
- Recently Dyno'd at 162 BHP
I absolutely adore it on the track, and in my opinion no other car comes as close with 'fun factor' together with reasonable performance for the price.
here are a few pics:

David - have you had the stem seals diagnosed? And what was your compression at?
I currently have a fair bit of blue smoke on idle, gear change and on overrun. Some mechanics have said seals, some have said rings.
Compression is 180 | 170 | 175 | 180 which to me looks pretty good.
Not sure whether to do the seals myself yet, or if it is rings.

Dammit I had typed up a big reply then my computer crashed and now I cant remember what i had typed
Anyway, DW...
I am assuming its the stem seals that have gone, my compression results were similar to yours, and werent greatly affected by adding a wee bit of oil to the cylinders, which suggests the rings are still sealing ok.
I am getting smoke on idle when warm and when blipping the throttle and on the over-run. It smells of burning oil too. It doesnt seem to smoke when booted hard though.
Also, it seems to be getting worse despite the car not being used.
I am stupidly busy just now with work and flat-hunting so I dont get a lot of time to play with the pug. Its just sitting at my parents house.
Despite hardly being driven, the smoking appears to be getting worse, which suggests that the rubber stem seals are perishing, rather than the rings mysteriously wearing.
Looking in the car, its very cramped around the timing belt area. Im told its possible to change the belt in-car but I dont fancy it, so will probably take the engine out to remove the head, which I really dont have time for just now
When I do get round to it, new seals and re-lapping the valves will hopefully cure the smoking and maybe give a wee bit of a perk to the power.

Sounds exactly like mine David, really smells of oil when idling after a longish run.
I'm just waiting to move - moving in 5 weeks and after 6 years of waiting will finally have a huge garage to tinker (20' x 11') so will whip the head off then to do the seals I think.

Any of you guys wanting any Pug parts.
I`ve got a 205 1.9 GTI sat on the drive with a blown head gasket.
Everything is available apart from the seats.
E-mail my profile for anymore details.
Sensible offers considered as our lass is really getting P*ssed off with the site of it and me come to think of it.
Cheers

started the Mi16 conversion on my track 205 a few weeks ago, still haven't started it tho
tried to do it with the 8v electrics and a dissy adapter, have fuel and spark but it won't fire.
should have done it with the 16v loom, so back to the drawing board.
in the mean time i bought an ex-cup clio racer. anyone want to buy a well prepped Mi16 205 thats had a fortune spent on it?
