Looking maybe for a new estate.merc or BMW. I want comfort. Aircon etc. Good build . and as high a MPG as possible. All I know is maybe the BMW has a better diesel for the money. Will spend around £5k private sale. All I know is to saty well clear off the double sunroof BMW models.
Cheers

was gonna say the same thing. i was vaguely toying with the idea of a 323 coupe for next year , similar sort of age. seems that i would need 7-9k for half decent examples.

Cheapest E39 Touring I could find on Autotrader:
1998 BMW 520i SE TOURING, 1998,
S reg. 137000 miles, 2 owners, FMDSH, silver with black leather, alloys, 6 stack CD, MFSW, air con, cruise control, 3mnths Tax & Test. £5,950 . ono. eves. days.
No chance of a diesel at that price.
I'm quite surprised you can even get an E39 this cheap!

You'll be after the 530 D. Cheapest you will find a decent one of these is £11 - 12,000.
For £5000 you'll be looking at a 93 - 95 ish E34 model with the 143 Bhp 2.5 turbo diesel.

There are always LPG cars - for some reason they don't seem to attract a premium despite the cost of LPG installation.
This LPG Merc is £4995:
