£25k - what to buy
#1
A friend has £25k buyning a hole in his pocket and can't decide what to get.
Wants:
Manual gearbox
Stealthy look (so no Scoobs!)
Excellent handling
Ability to carry golf clubs
Can be new or used, but he doesn't like M5s (already suggested).

Thanks for responses so far
He's interested in an RX-8 (though I'm trying to put him off - think it looks terrible) and he just won't consider a BMW. I know, how can you NOT look at the M5.
R33 - too lairy
S4 - he's actually considering an RS4, but they're still £30k+
Nissan 350 - under consideration.
I've also mentioned a 968 Clubsport or a 993/911
Any more?

Him and me a like.
I have been through this thought process and have basically came up with two cars:
The Merc E55 AMG and the BMW M5, both awesome cars and both stealth scooby killers. I will be testing both after xmas as I turn the big 3-0 and can get decent insurance quotes (i paid £1800 for the last yeasrs scoob driving )
I thought about the RX8 but brand new cars just don't float my boat, I would rather get a FAR better car with a few miles on the clock and a full service history

E55 write up

The E-Class is one of those cars that is always a safe, if not entirely thrilling, bet, and the estate version is an obvious option in this market sector. But stick a 354 bhp 5.5-litre V8 engine under the bonnet, tune the suspension, fit ultra-low profile tyres on 18-inch alloy wheels, and install race-developed brakes, and things suddenly look more interesting.

Carl - He's already had a TVR
You can get some 3200 GTs for a little over £25k, but IMHO a Ghibli or a Quattroporte V8 is a lot more 'stealth'.

Yeah, the 928's come up - the GTS would appear to be the one to go for, but it's really not an everyday car, is it?
And if you were going for an RS2, you might as well go for an RS4, surely? Just over £30k now.

How about a Nissan 350Z? I'm not too sure about the large rear strut brace in the boot though.
And as for the car, it's awesome

I would defo agree with porker club sport, a personal fav. Also was about to suggest the RS2 (great minds eh), and Rx8/350Z also strong contenders, RX8 being the better IMO - in the same league you could consider the Celica 190T Sport.
My personal favourite is the Integra Type R, DC2 great drivers car, but probably not what he is looking for looks a controvertial and not very refined. However, it’s big brother the DC5 which you can get new for £22 odd, or nearly new for around £17k is a fantastic looking car IMO and a bit more refined, check out Ian Lichfields website. Also highly exclusive, I have yet to see one on the road, it will be a real head turner.
YUMMY!

Golf R32, not as flashy as some of the other brands like Audi/Beemer/poorker perhaps, and some complain they're abit middle aged, but the R32, is nice and low, looks understated but beefy, and has a fantastic engine, with 4motion handling to match. Whilst on the cheaper end of cars, Hyundai Coupe V6 is not bad (wouldn't have one meself.).
Honda Accord Type R is a stonking car, but dull as granny strip tease to look at.
Personally if I had that much cashola, I would get a Clio V6, but don't think you'd get your golf clubs in that, but I wouldn’t' care.
Cheers

I had a 928 (s4) for a couple of years and it is certainly very usable, has a big 'hatch' for golfclubs, no-one knows what it is and it goes like stink. (not much performance difference (if any) between manual S, S4, GT or GTS)
edited to say, and for 25k you could buy the best one in the UK and have money to spare

It can get expensive if it's not been looked after like anything else I suppose. Common problems are MAF (recon unit = 400 euro), niggly electrical gremlins, and if the looong belt goes it's bent valves (on 32v motors). Doesn't rust to speak of, motor is unstoppable and there is a growing US supercharger offering to take it to 500+ at the wheel for around 7000 dollars. Manual gearbox is the one to have, auto is great but dulls accelerative forces/feelings. They're soo cheap to buy anyway it's a real bargain supercar. I spent loads on mine but not because I had to. Fuel consumption is no worse than the figures bandied about on here for scoobs....
Stealth it ain't, but it surprises many!!!
edited to say, you need to have a good independent 928 specialist ideally nearby, as most porsche dealers have no idea. In germany there was only one mechanic left at a dealers down south that had a clue. Luckily for me I have a 928 fanatic porsche mechanic 10 meters from the office!!! yahoo group 928gb is a good place to start asking questions - good luck
