Check out the Climb Dance footage of Ari Vatinen taking a 405 T16 up Pikes Peak. Unreal!!!
Look at the drops as well

yeah, his co-driver had a heartattack and so couldn't be in the car with him
now I get scared by just looking at that...no way would you get me in that car!!! some scenes you can see the back wheels drifting over the edges
crapped my pants - absolutely wild!

The Audi S1 holds the record for the pikes peak at something like 10 and a half minutes, soon after group B rallying was banned, audi announced they had a 1000bhp engine for the S1, which was tested up on pikes peak and was undriveable as it was just oo fast.

No, the current record time was done in 1994 by Rod Millen in a Toyota Celica SuperSportTurbo in 10m 04.06s. Best Audi time ever was 10m 47.85s set in 1987 by Walter Rohrl in an Audi Sport Quattro. Vatanen just pipped him the following year in the Peugeot 405 Mi16 Turbo (which is what the above film is about) in 10m 47.22s. How quick must Rod Millen have been going?
I've driven the road, somewhat slower than these guys (in a Chrysler LHS) and it is extremely scary. IIRC, it took me more than half an hour

Ari "maximum attack" Vatenan, my hero. He had a good showing in this years Rally Finland too, and I'm not just the driving. He finished 11th O/A but said he didn't want to go too fast as it would jeopardize his chances of a works drive in next years WRC (some rule about the 3rd driver can't have had a podium finish in last x years). Also said all the young guns who couldn't beat him might as well give up now. Ha ha, typical Ari

I remember reading about Martin Schance (Rallycross god from a few years ago) taking his X-trac Escort over there for the Pikes Peak. He didn't modify it much (some silly horsepower anyway and the weight of a bit of tissue paper) took it off the cargo plane and drove it from the airport to the event! If you know rallycross cars (particulary the supercar class) then you know they are not really road motors!
But then he would get out of his car at a meeting when he was pushed out and stand in the middle of the track when the offending driver came back round and then chuck his crash helmet at him...whilst the other guy is still flat out.
Anyway, I think he was on for a top time but got a flat near to top.
