When did the 996 get 320 BHP?
#1
D'ont know much about Porkers. I presume they started out in 98 with 280 BHP(or was it 300?) and at some point were upgraded to 320 BHP. Does anybody know which year that was?
Also, does anybody know whether this improved performance or did it just make up for weight gain.
Many thanks as always for answering my pointless pontifications on a number of cars I c'ant really afford but waste hours thinking about.

MY98 996 is 3.4L and has 300bhp and 258lb/ft.
C2 weight-1320kg and C4-1430kg
MY02 996 is 3.6L and has 320 bhp and 273lbb/ft.
C2 weight-1345kg and C4-1430kg
Other differences, Turbo's trip computer and headlights in all models & cup holders! Front track also increased 10mm at the front.

It's quicker. 3.6 > 3.4 litres. It has gained torque at all usable RPMs. I dont have my 911 book, but it publishes all acceleration times by various european magazines. The 3.6 911 almost matches the turbo models.

The 3.6 996s are quicker than the 3.4 996s.
I've just seen a Jap video comparing a 3.6 C2 to a latest version Honda NSX. The way the Porsche pulls away from the NSX when exiting corners is mind blowing.
The pre-MY02 3.4 has already got a very torquey engine, & the 3.6 is even better. I think part of the reason is due to the Variocam Plus on the 3.6 (3.4 only has Variocam).

Having driven a brand new 996 round a track, I have to say it was one of the best balanced cars I've been fortunate to drive!
Much better than the Boxster S!! But I guess we all expected that!

Why 10.1 Autocar vs 11.5 Evo for 0-100? 10.1 is certainly impressive for such an unimpressive power to weight ratio and stands out about 1.5 seconds clear of everything else with a similar PWR. That would indeed make it as quick as a 911 Turbo
