My dad has got about £1000-£1500 to spend on a car. He does quite a few miles to work a day so it's got to be fast and reliable. His short list so far is...Lotus Excel, Porsche 924 or a Mk1 MR2.

Anyone got any other ideas?

We're going to see a 924 next week, is there anything to look out for?

Good idea on the MGB, I'll ask him.

AllanB, He wants somthing that looks "sporty", something that's going to be happy at over 100mph too every day too, I don'tknow too much about Charades (except they're silly fast 0-60), but i get the feeling a 1ltr would pop with the abuse he gives it!

This looks good, and mileage is not an issue on these:

Well my dad seems to have an un-natural dislike of Japanese cars...I suggested the 200SX and the Celica...if I had that money that's exactly what I'd be thinking along the lines of! I'll show him some pics and try and talk him round

924's aren't hugely quick in a straight line but do have fantastic handling and balance.

Thinks to look for:

Go for a galvanised car post 1980 I think. If the car you look at has any rust it has had panels replaced.

Gear shift should be very smooth and precise although when cold it can baulk.

Rear hatch and sunroofs tend to leak so check for water damage.

Shake the steering wheel forward and back. If there is any play the welds may have broken and you'll need a new wheel or have it rewelded.

The dashboad will be cracked- they all are
Electric windows may stick so check both sides.

Clutch is very heavy.

Big mileage isn't really a problem as long as the car has been maintained.

Best bet however would be to get a 924S. It has the 944's 2.5 engine, better brakes and suspension.

Good web link is www.924.org
