its basically a gti with a turbo diesel engine
they are quick and cheap to run 80hp loads of torque which can kill the gearbox
usuall 205 bits to check
get one with power steering
the gentry model is an auto 4 spd

My mate runs one, for his journey from Luton to Harrow each day. Averages 50mpg, keeps up with the traffic nicely thanks to the torque. Very cheap car to run. Just look out for cambelts, heater matrix and suspension bushes.
As an alternative though, have a look at a 306TD, I have one to bobble around in. 45+mpg, group 5 insurance, better handling, and a lot better built.

205TD..
i currently have one.. bought as station car.. to run along side the Scoob.. unfortunately the Scoob had to go (House Renovations..).. but the TD stayed.. that was 2 years ago...
It's a great car, really quick.. (for a diesel) mine will do about a ton, and will quite happily cruise about 90 odd.. and will also double as a transit van...
handles well (helped by 205 1.6 wheels 185 tyres..).. and they have good brakes. 205 GTI i think...?
the best thing about it, is when you fly past unsespecting victims....
I had a burn with a well driven new 328 for about 10 miles.. on the lanes near me (A21).. and was having to back off (whch was quite annoying).. the look on the guy and his girlfriends face when he saw a 5 door 205 pull up next to him at the lights was just priceless...!!!
the only thing i will say is it's best to spend a few quid more and get a low mileage one .. if poss...? had a few problems with mine.. hoses, gaskets, etc.(but i don't think my diving has really helped that..??). but still a good strong car..

Rik,
There was a little motorway incident between Spider's 205TD and ScottW's turbo wagon (both members on here) on the way back from a tour round Prodrive!
I'll point them at this thread
