Thinking of getting a 205 1.6 GTi as a winter run about (hopefully picking one up tommorrow) but whats the issue with fuel. Will it run on unleaded or do I need leaded??

From what I gather its only the 1.9 engine and not the 1.6 thats effected by fuel type but could anyone confirm??

ta muchly

It will depend on the MY of the car. Anything older than a J/K plate I believe will need to run on 4 star unless the previous owner had the car altered to take UL. The MY from J/K were fitted with a cat so UL is required. If you can get one pre cat and about an H reg then you will the most powerful 205. If you get a 1.9 with a cat it will be like a 1.6 without cat if you know what I mean.

Hope this helps. I'll double check this first mind you as I'm no expert but i did owned two 205's.

Thumbs up

Anything from late 89 onwards is OK to run on unleaded. I had a 90 G-Reg, and covered over 35,000 miles on unleaded, with the occasional top up with 4 star.

It is only the older models which suffer (i.e. the ones with 105bhp as opposed to 115bhp).

If you get one, you will have the most fun ever - they are fantastic

Heres my old one:

Dream Weaver is correct,89 onwards can use unleaded.

Had one of these cars when i was 18,it was brilliant, handled like a go-Kart (watch the back end on fast corners, dont lift off!).
Had a few problems with airflow meter but a 2nd hand one sorted that out, other problem was quite serious (blown engine),but the car had done over 100k.Gave me a excuse to put in a 1.9,mated to the 1.6 gearbox it really flew!

My mates got a 309 with a mi16 valve engine, this also really flies (when its going!)

Sadly moved onto bigger things ,but i had a really good time driving my 205.
