handling average altho suspension far to soft. suffers turbo lag quite bad even tho the turbo comes in @ 1750rpm which is odd. good build quality and will happily cruise all day tho.
(my dad had one for 3yrs so im not bull****ting!)

I had one in `99 and loved it! Many people on here will tell you they are lardy and generally cr@p. Just have a go yourself and see what you think, they are not a performance car really but they go well enough and have decent economy too.
It`s also cheap and easy to chip them if you want more power. As I said, I loved mine and have been on VAG products ever since but many on here don`t like them.

Depends what you go from, if you went from a scooby to a 1.8T then you'd be pissed at the perfomace, but if it was a big upgrade from a standard car then it would be cool for a good amout of time. Had a 1.8 non turbo which was a good car, but not sporty at all. When I picked up the 1.8T after I was chuffed, little bit of turbo whistle and it pulled nicely without effort, cornered like a pig with 3 legs but it went ok. Once thing I can say is the car never had anything done to it in 2 years, not a bulb, wiper blade nothing, worked perfectly every single time!!

I was dissapointed driving one having fancied one to replace my MK2 GTI (currently for sale), found it a bit flat but a remap sorts that, well made, good looking with good residuals and I will shut up cos i have just bought a 2 year old Mondeo 1.8 LX with a heady 125 bhp and no opportunity to remap it.

Can u get a atmospheric dump valve for them?
AARRRRRGGGHHH <runs out of room screaming MAX POWER ALERT>
Seriously though, no you cant run atmos DV's on the 1.8T engine as they **** the air metering.

I drove a friends one before when I had my wrx at the time......very disappointing, felt heavy and slow, not just in comparison to my impreza but even my friends 172 clio would have eaten it. Not a performance car at all, doesn't even look any diff. to a normal golf.

I've gone the safer route with a Hyperboost DV and a Dynatwist induction kit and I can hear the woosh clear enough, and the turbo whistle now my car has been chipped is great fun!

Not sure if its up-grading or down-grading really?? Perhaps its a side-ways move on a slight upward angle?
More power, more torque, better handling, less practical, less economical and just something different - A Cooper 'S'.

IMHO it's an average car.
The bad - not very fast, doesn't stick out from the crowd, overpriced.
The good - Comfortable, well built, doesn't depreciate in value as quick as others in same category, comes with Recaro seats.
I'm sure theres more but that's all I can think of the now. My m8 has one and I feel he has got to drive it hard all the time to make it feel anything special.

I find mine to be a very capable underestimated car, but simply not entertaining enough. Its just too comfy to be a drivers car, but great for motorways and in town.
Sure with some mods it could be loads of fun, but I'm not interested in that kinda move - prefer to sell it and move on.
Its smooth, feels quick and a good all round package.
Mine's sold now BTW (to the first person to call/view)
