Bmw Z3 question
#1
If you only want a 1.9 Z3, then get an MX-5 instead. Much better car.
2.8 engine or above on the Z3 is a different story. I quite like them now, they're so uncool, they're cool again. Like Capris.

I'm looking at getting a Z3 for the missus. Just need some helpful hints from any owners/previous owners or anybody who knows anything about these cars, on what to look for.
Will be looking to get a Z3 on a 97/98, on a 1.9cc. Do these cars suffer from any problems?
What sort of mileage is the major service due (cambelt)?
Any input would be grateful.

Hi m8
Just traded in my 97 P plate last week. Never had any probs from it, no engine or leak troubles. Nice car, bit pedestrian but we enjoyed it over the summer.
Service is an an oil, service 1 and service 2(expensive). Don't know the timing change though. Watch out for the underside as there can be fuel tank probs from them bouncing.
Cheers

.........and the ZM Coupe is a lot more expensive to buy than the ZM Roadster, the coupes hold their value amazingly well.
I`ve had a quick go in a 2.8i Z3 and actually thought it was OK, I know they get slated but the engine won me over. Not sure about a 4 cylinder one though.

Same (old) rear end as the E30 and E36 compact (semi trailing arm) and chassis is more or less the same as the E36 compact.
Do not (under any circumstances) buy a 2.8 with a build date before march 98. If so you are asking for trouble - this is the fables M52 engine with premature bore wear. I know, I had one, and the engine went. The water pump on these early 2.8's are also a bit dodgy.
1.9 is woefully underpowered but if it's pose value you're after then it matters not. Early hoods leak.
Shop around for dealer prices on inspection 1, Inspection 2 and oil change. The differences in prices can be £50-£100.

Mines a Jan '98 M Roadster.
Roof doesn't leak, engine's blinding, handling's..... interesting!
The Coupes are not that much dearer anymore (about 3-4k for a similar age).
Great replacement for my STi5 because its almost as quick, better built, won't break as often and doesn't scream like its being battered on a motorway.
Plus, its a convertible so its got the same amount of gay image as any other.
Trust me, when you lash people in things that they think are quick, they soon drop the whole gay thing!
