Question

Mate is looking for a new car he is currently on a HP and wants to stop shelling out £250 a month on a car which is getting negative equity due to mileage. (21k a year)

So upto £4k decent image, reliability (not a scooby sorry) wants decent performance and has been looking at Audi A4/80, BMW 3 series, and Lexus GS300 for a change! They look ok, but would like some other sugestions, he likes the Golfs but isn't too bothered he's also seen a S40 2.0 turbo.

So and advice / idea is much appreciated!

Thanks Guys

think Id go the 3 series route - mile cruncher and reasonable car so long as you get the 6 cylinder.

4K - what would I get? Hmm....probably a BM as well actually, thinking about it.

But he says he wants 'decent' image. So bmw is a no-no surely

Not sure what sort of GS300 you'd get for 4k and you'll be looking at an old A4. Could go for a passat? Saab?

Ok image isn't that important he just wants a nice car (which is a bit "special") in other words has a few toys.
Will suggest a Saab seen a few 9-3's he isn't bothered if its an old A4 won't have it long I don't think.

I told him if its a BMW its got to be atleast a 323i!

I don't think he'll get many 'toys' in the german cars. Notoriously underequipped at the age he's looking at (if he's lucky he'll find one equipped but not on a small engined one). Lexus will have lots of toys (look at other large Jap cars for well equipped cars too). Omega/Scorpio will have lot's of toys although image isn't up there although both are understated.

406 3.0v6? I've been considering these and they come with a lot of kit and a good whack or performance and refinement

You'd get a very late Saab 9000 Aero (225BHP) for £4k.

As Dracoro said, you'd get good Omega's / Scorpio's for that - 2.9 24v Cosworth Scorpio for that kind of dosh.

If he likes Golfs you may just be able to get the new shape Seat Toledo for that money - performance wouldn't be great though unless you got the V5....

Alfa 156??

He really likes the old A4's he knows he will only be able to get a 1.8 but isn't that bothered by that - just want to know do they stand up to a beating, the ones he's seen have done 100k plus and he will do 20k plus a year for about 3 years.
