Trying to get some info from the weekend users...

How good are they?

What mileage can they take, obviously with full VW service history?

Economy wise, are they MEGA thirsty?

Has anyone had any experience with these?

Whats the "real-world" performance like from the 2.9 V6??

Cheers,
Grant

Nothing spectacular.

Nice and smooth but no Q car.

Always gor for FSH as the head gasket is prone to go @ 60k.

My bro owned one of these for years and let me use it - I'll check with him.

From my memory it was smooth, but no faster than the V6 Mondeo that I use as a runabout.

I've driven Corrado's for years (check the name) and the VR6 is one quick motor for fwd. Some people (including me) didn't feel it was as quick as it was (0-60 6.1) because of the smoothness of that V6, somehow the 4cylinders seemed more urgent, but they were simply harsher. The handling was the best for fwd at its time, and is still v.good now. Recommend a full AA inspection. Oil pump has a tendency to die around 90k and is pricey to fix. Prepare to feint if you need any body panels, even VW can't explain why the front wing for a TT is £65 and the doorskin for a Corrado is £750. Bonnet £850, bumpers £800 etc. Make sure the electric spoiler is fully operational, another £300 if not. Check footwells for damp, doorseals usually but sometimes sunroof or windscreen. Other than that, all the usual used car checks, kick tyres, bounce suspension (LOL).

They were/are a brilliant car that was badly marketed, and then left out in the cold. But it can be a joy to own and drive one. They will be entering "classic" status before too long, and with only 9500 to ever grace these shores it's an exclusive little club. Aim for a low mileage "Storm" with no exterior mods and you'll have a lovely motor.

I owned one for 2 years before the scoob. Performance put a smile on my face but didnt shock like a scooby does (considering its 190bhp). Put an induction kit on it and, combined with the v6, it made the best noise of any car Ive ever owned.

I loved the car and regret selling it. Didnt have any serious problems with it in 40k miles and sold it with 90k on the clock.
Couple of mods you have to do are:-
- Filing down the wiper arms or fitting a single wiper conversion as the arms dont spring tightly against the screen for some reason.

- Fit a seperate wiring loom for the headlights and upgrade the bulbs, think I bought this from BR Motorsports. - Daylight, all day, every day!

- Lights buzzer...due to my own absent-mindedness!

I had the gear linkages done as the cable shift can go a little awol, and a driveshaft...which wasnt stupid money.

Cant remember anything else going wrong.

Mine was fabulous on fuel....On super unleaded I never got less than 27mpg off a tank and would average 34-36mpg with a VERY light foot going back and forth to work - 3/4 motorway at 70mph. Once got 40mpg going to and from work really trying hard. These figures were on the trip computer and borne out at the pump.

For reference, using the same driving style I get 38mpg out of a Mk3 golf gti 8v and 28-30mpg out of a standard RB5.

Check the trip computer on setting number 2 - This holds all mpg data til reset - sold mine with an av. of 36mpg over 800miles.

If it doesnt work....often means the car has been clocked.

Thats it for now!

Hot (never had air-con as standard), eats front tyres, drinks oil and immensely scary in the wet.

Second best car I ever had A Classic already. Try one...

- Dinks oil ? Get it to the garage
- Scary in the wet ? Nope, you must have had Yoki 539's. Mine grips like hell, wet or dry.

J4CKO - It might share some things with the Golf (little bits like engines, gearboxes etc LOL) but the original design by Karmann was intended for Porsche to be the follow on from the 944. A change of strategy in Stuttgart left them with the project on the shelf, so they offered it to VW and, with a few tweeks for fwd and corporate identity, the Corrado was born. Porsche went on to ditch the "poor mans versions" and developed the Boxster, and VW fouled up the marketing of the Corrado right from the start. Should only have ever been VR6, with a supercharged 4wd evolution later IMHO.

Thats the story I read on one of the owners club sites, but if it's total b011ox then I'll get mi flame suit.

I had a K reg before my Impreza and sold it to my mate who still owns it!.
I bought it with about 30K and sold it with about 55K.
It was a great car to own.The chassis was ace despite being FWD,it was very throttle adjustable with easy to control lift off oversteer.Looking back the handling was better than my Impreza with less understeer. They do wheelspin a lot in the wet though.

They are quicker than you think, the performance is deceptive due to the linear engine, you don't get the wallop in the back like in an Impreza.
I have run my standard MY98 against it loads of times and from a rolling start I get a car length on it by about 90 mph.Once over the ton it is actually faster,I kid you not
The engine sounds awesome.

Mine had a few problems with the cooling system, every 3-6 months it would develope a leak from somewhere or other. After replacing a couple of O rings, the water pump and the radiator I realised the head gasket was weeping even though it didn't show up when I had the coolant tested. In the end I fixed it myself.
There are a few things that point to a weeping gasket
-the seller has lots of receipts for cooling system parts
-oil weeping from the join between the block and head on the left hand side of the engine
-when first started in the morning it runs on five cylinders for the first 10 secs or so (due to water in the cylinder)
-The coolant needs topping up regulary.Mine would go from max to min in about 2 weeks
- the cooling fan comes on frequently even after a gentle drive
Mine ran a lot cooler by about 10 'c with a new gasket and the fan came on much less.

Other than the cooling system nothing went wrong. The interiors are tough although the edge of the seats can wear if its had a lazy/fat owner. The heater controls are fragile and cost a fortune,I fixed mine with araldite. They normally get damaged if the stereo been robbed at some time or other. They are also quite rattley. The door handles can break if not greased regulary
Mine also had a water leak caused by a badly fitted windscreen.

My old one has still got the original exhaust after 10 years hard use and 95K,and the bodywork is rust free. The engine is starting to sound a little noisy but it still goes well and uses almost no oil.

If they hadn't stopped making them I would have bought a new one instead of the Impreza

HTH

Andy

My Corrado was the best car I ever owned, I traded it in for an Alfa GTV which I kept for 8 weeks before getting rid.

Anyway, mine was awesome, never had a problem with front tyre wear or excessive oil consumption. It had 50,000 miles on it when I sold it and was still running smooth and pulling well. Performance wasn`t fantastic by todays standards but it`ll still scare some expensive machinery.

Get in one and thrash it through some lanes. Literally go as fast as you can!! You will get scared before the car!! Its a monster that no-one knows about. The Corrado will lift a rear wheel before it lets go at the back, I've seen it done! Truly amazing machine for the money.

Thumbs up

I currently have a corrado vr6 which i've owned for about about a year and half, the car cost me 4500 with 100,00 miles, has now done 127,00 and i can't think of anything i'd want to change it with. I get an av 31mpg, (not been driving it that hard of late), havn't really had any thing go wrong, comfy to drive, handles really well and the engine note sounds great. As for real world performance iv'e had a couple of run ins, one with a new shape wrx, from about 40mph nothing in it then could of passed him at 110, also a nissan pulsar gtir, it must of been standard as from about 30 to top of second i had to brake to avoid running into it, also if u look at the in gear times of 30-70 in 5.7 and 60-100 in 8.1 i think it fairs quite well, what are the similar times for a impreza turbo?, classic shape, so all in all im well happy with the car and think im gonna keep it for quite a bit longer

"in gear times of 30-70 in 5.7 and 60-100 in 8.1 "

not trying to cause trouble, but the these stats dont add up,

the best stats ive seen for the corrado vr6 are:
0-60 6.4
0-100 17.7
60 - 100 11.3
1/4 mile 15.1
30 - 70 6.8
50 - 70 9.4
bhp/per ton 156bhp

so your stats seem a little off, is your modded a little?

(60 - 100 in 8.1 secs) thats the same as my fiat coupe 20vt, which has 171bhp per ton, so something no right

like i said not trying to cause any trouble, i do like the corrado vr6, looks great

dave

Some corrado specs from a coupla mags.
these are tested figures rather than manufacturers figures.
Evo - 0-60 in 6.2
Autocar 50-70 in 5.7
can't remember the mag but 0-100 in 15.6 or 15.9
most state top speed of 145-155.

I got 30mpg comfortably from mine.

as a note of 'real world' performance, my mate has a 260bhp wrx import and from 80 to 130 (on our private empty track , there was absolutely nothing in it. After 130 the VR6 is a little faster than the wrx.

how did I miss this?

Corrado VR6 is a stonking motor no mistake. I have beaten Escort Cossies in it (yeah yeah yawn yawn) but in fact 30-70 the Corrado was timed as being quicker by AutoCar

If anything it handles better than the M3, the traction control is not intrusive and the leccy spoiler always amused me

Drop it, stick a jetex on it and an induction kit and you will smile

Have a look in autocar magazine, (older issues) and it says 30-70 in 5.7 the golf vr6 does it in 6.4 and the 50-70 time is actually measured in top gear (for that particular mag), to test engine flexibility, and also i know its sad but ive actually measured my 60-100 with stopwatch and i got 8.0 secs, thats 3rd gear all the way and i know a stopwatch isnt that accurate but not 1.5 secs out surely, just thought i,d give some honest views on the car. p.s , im not sure if my car is modded or not, certainly doesn't like it, no obvious signs of modifacations, also dont think its chipped either as had to dismount the ecu at one stage and it didint look like it had ever been disturbed.

The 30-70 time is very good, mainly because it will get to 70 in second gear
