Golf 4motion

anybody know if this car is any good, a friend of mine is interested in getting one or an impreza trubo. Both are 4 wheel drive and with 200 + bhp. As I have an impreza I told him to get one, but he seems set on a 4motion.

Hi Mate
My next door Neighbour has one.
Very nice car as it has all the creature comforts in but not a patch on the Scooby for grinability or driveability!!!
But I like you I am little biased

The V6 4Motion was the other car I was tossing up when I bought my scoob MY99 RB5Wr Sport. Was getting existing Golf GTi serviced asked sales person for second hand 4Motion, they had none. Had already driven one so knew what they were like. Went down the road, saw RB5 was smitten and did the deal. They were two cars I had contempolated long and hard.
Differences, 4Motion much more refined, ideal for big mileage drivers and motorway journeys, generaly a well equiped car, from a reliable manufacturer. Most 4Motions come loaded with goodies as well.
Impreza, for me, the ultimate driving machine I can afford, with poracticality included. Also from a reliable manufacturer.
I decided this was the car for me, as I do not do many miles and very few motorway journeys. Had I been looking for an everyday car for high mileage use, well I have to ay that I would prbablyhave opted for the Golf. And also I would have a golf 4Motion after the impreza if needs be without doubt.
But at the end of the day, the 4Motion is NOT by any strech the driving experience that a scoob gives you.
Sorry for the long winded reply, but this is how I see it.

yeah I guess the problem with the 4motion is it hasn't got a turbo, but as I did have a gti a few years ago I do like Golf's. Have to say the gti was very sluggish compared to the scooby. The R32 may be different though.

yeah think the fact my mate has seen a y-reg 4motion with 20k on the clock for 13.5k at an official VW garage is tempting him. Have to say when the R32 comes onto the 2nd hand market at an affordable price I will be very tempted to change my impreza for it.

Turbo 80,
Turbo or not, they are just not the driving experience.
R32 yeah, think this is a different matter, and would love a spin in one to see. But, when you look at the price tag, and compare that to say an STi8 which would you choose?

Swapped a 4Motion last November for a new PPP'ed WRX.
I found the Golf to be a very nice car but was too fast for its handling abilities on a and b roads - the big V6 lump at the front meant a few exciting moments. Turn in was poor and steering was very vague - gave you no feedback at all, it just turned when it wanted to. And the 4WD was poor - on fast flowing corners I could feel it shift power from front to back and slightly unsettle the car for a split second, quite unnerving I thought.
Interior quality was very good, although the standard seats were not as supportive as I thought they were going to be for long journey's.
Reasonable miles per gallon from it and it didn't go wrong, as mentioned earlier lots of toys inside - rain sensing wipers, auto dimming mirror, cruise control, climate control etc etc BUT it all added up to a pretty dull and uninteresting drive.
Well pleased with my swap to Scooby ownership - I even prefer it on long journeys, stereo may be rubbish in it but I rarely listen, the engine sounds too good. It rattles less, looks better, has a proper 4WD system and doesn't look like a 1.4CL shopping trolley...
The 4Motion should never have been, the R32 is what is should have been and now is - IMHO of course.

yeah have to agree with you on that, STi8 would be hard to turn down for an R32. Sat in a STi8 at Lucas in mansfield and the build quality seemed to be much higher than on previous impreza's. Was very impressed with it.

Had one when they first came out, biggest pile of crap ever. Huge dissapointment, too thirsty for what you got, crap steering, suspension too soft, crap brakes, better off with an S3 if you are after something similar, that is what I got after the 4motion, different class inside and out and a much better drive.

Lots of money for something not very fast and not very involving...
Not a car for driving enjoyment more a A road / Motorway car you can do loads of miles in..
I did nearly buy one though

I too drove both a scooby and a 4motion , ended up with a scooby main reason being the scooby has perm AWD and the 4motion has 4WD when a computer thinks you need it , both very nice to drive golf is more of a family car and better built,
but you don't buy a scooby for build , or paint finish you just buy it for the bloody big smile it puts on your face every time you drive it.
i can't see me having any other car from now on .
will a cofin fit in the back of a wagon?

I had a real good blast against one when I had my 306 Rallye...
The 306 was quicker than the Golf and when we hit the twisty stuff I just left it for dead!
An Impreza is a much better option!
