Renault Clio Cup - Opinions

Hi Guys,
In the process of hopefully selling my beloved scoob cos of a change in both marital and financial status however, I still want a car with a bit of oomph! in it but thats smaller and cheap to run. Have read about the Cup in a few of the motoring mags and all seem to rate it... just wondered if any of you had any experiences with em? Good or bad I'd appreciate some info.

Buy one, you won't regret it. I've had mine for 6 months and it's been fantastic. Very quick, sharp handling and averaging 36 mpg . No reliability/build problems to report of ( cue all the Mini girls ). You can pick used ones up for around the 10k mark with 2 yrs of waraanty left. DO IT!!!!

LAD offer a 200bhp kit. You can even buy them brand new in this spec with a Renault warranty. Test drove one. VERY fast for a little car.
I agree you wouldn't regret - slightly vague steering though, make sure you have a good test drive, if you like - get.

not too sure about LAD's claims of 200bhp when you hear about their previous claims on pugs etc, but any modified one will be rather quick for a little hatch.
I'm keen to possibly get one next year/year after when I need a nice little cheap car to run and I sell the Pulsar, the thought of a little cheap car anoying big cars is very appealing.

Assuming you have a standard UK300 then cup is as fast from about 20-80mph (i.e. the sort of acceleration you can do without seriously risking points and a fine). Its only at about 80/90mph that the extra power of the scoobys do their work. Great little cars and I'll possibly get one myself

No Kenny you will give the marque a bad name !! LOL..
Seriously its a top car, in the dry I would be able to stick with most Scoobs, in the wet the car is a handful, especially with no abs ! Would go back though as I am saving loadsa cash.

Stay well clear of the LAD conversions there has been numerous threads on Cliosport slagging them off because of power output falling way short of the quoted output and even losing torque.

I've got one - was after a scooby, test drove loads of them, then found the cup by accident and bought it there and then after just a ten minute test drive.
I've had the ECU remapped (superchip - 20min reversible job)and fitted a green panel filter, and guess I'm getting a healthy 180-182bhp with about 160ftlbs torque - all for an extra £300.
Look on autotrader and you might one or two used ones for £9500-£10000, or go a for new one from a discount centre and pay £11000-£11500. You can pay an extra £690 and get climate on it now, too, and you can get them in silver, too (honest).

£293 fitted/flashed at Demon Tweeks. I don't know what renault can pick-up, so I'll be flashing back the original settings when I'm due the 12k service (another 3 or 4 months probably). Cost for each "flashing" is £50, so I suppose over time it's a dear option. Superchips give a one year warranty which covers the ECU.
Car "feels" very responsive lower down the rev range, and rev limit is always 7250 where it used to vary regularly between 6750 and 7250 (irrespective of engine temp). Superchips website claims 8-10bhp gain - my local rolling road is out of action, so I can't get it checked - will probably do it when I get the service, so I can compare flashed and non flashed.
They also claim 160lb ft of torque rather than the 149 ft lb as standard - this feels spot on. This extra torque means that I'm using 3rd more at around 40 when I would have used the high revs offered by 2nd - don't need to now, it just pulls from 3000 revs so sweetly. I used to have a Golf VR6, and the clio feels more torquey!
Green filter was £30 ish, so I told a little lie when I said £300 above - it was £325ish! I haven't fitted the filter yet, so above benefits are from superchip alone.

I'm guessing that there might have been something up with the brakes then, as I've found them to be great - loads of feel. However, if you mean they make the car squirm about on the road, as if they're heavily front biased, then I know what you mean!

Have a look at cliosport.net - there's loads of people who've tried the various filters, inductions kits and vipers. From what I've read, they're not that much more effective than normal panel filters on Clio's - go and have a look...

100-0 braking times
BMW M3 4.61
Evo 7 4.53
STI 7 4.47
Porsche 991 4.15
TVR Tuscan 4.4
Caterham Blackbird 4.38
And the Clio 172 is 4.35 which isn’t bad you have to admit, if there is one thing the 172 is renowned for is good brakes. The one you test drove mate must have been fooked.

How has the superchips conversion affected your fuel consumption? Does the engine feel smoother or are there any other benefits? I like the sound of this for my 172 & I am pretty sure that Powerstation do it as well.

No effect on fuel that I've noticed - I reset my trip thingy about 2 months ago and have done 2700 miles since then; average speed recorded is 31mph and mpg is 34.6. My driving has been a mix of town driving and 60-70mile motorway round-trips.
Have a look at www.superchips.co.uk/curves/cliosport.pdf for the claimed difference made. I've taken it with a pinch of salt, but honestly, it does feel even better than the excellent standard car.
Oh, but before you buy, please please check out cliosport.net - there are other chips around, eg unichip and the R-sport ECU, which are raved about by other 172/cup owners...

Whoever it was on page 1 who said the steering was vague must have never driven a Cup IMHO. Steering is sharper on mine than my old P1.
I second about the brakes I've found them some of the best I've used.
Quite a few owners have had problems with their cars. We've not had any yet with ours and nearing 10,000 miles.
Its quite quick but dont expect it to have mid range punch of a classic scoob

Cheers Guys looks like this is the little babe to go for then when the scoob gets a new daddy. Just have to find a local Renault dealer then and go for a test run.

I had a PiperX Viper kit on my 172 a year or so ago. The problem with it is that it needs to get a good cold air feed, and there is nowhere to put the feed pipe easily at the front of the engine bay. I sold my kit to a guy who removed the bumper and cut the feed pipe into it !!! One easier way is to remove one of the foglamps though.
I vented mine from the supply to the standard airbox, and it felt more torquey. Not sure about the increase in power, as it felt quicker with the standard airbox, but pulled harder from mid revs with the kit on.
Oh and the sound is sweeeeeeet.
