Understeering Honda CTR...Advice please
#1
Noticed over the last few weeks the CTR is starting to understeer.
Hi Gang
Just a little to begin with but now getting worse. Tyres have got even wear, but down to 3.1 mm on one and 3.4 on the other.
Has any other CTR Pilot found this happening?
Also thinking of going for Toyo's this time round, anybody else tried them?
Cheers

Cant say Iv'e had any probs with mine, however the standard Potenzas are well known for being a bit pony on the CTR,thought of changing mine, but with 5-6 mm tread left on them,I dont like to throw money away.

A sign of the tyre wear does not necessarily determine whether the Geometry is out or not on all cases.
I would get it checked, but I have driven the EP3 on a number of occasions, I manage to get it to understeer, quite often espeacily round roundabouts.

Yep, Going in for its first service on Friday, so i will press them to check it under warrenty. Still think Toyo's are the way to go, they were ontstanding on the RS 1800.

Understeer. Ive got an easy solution, go into the corner slightly too quickly, lift your foot of the throttle, whilst yanking your steering wheel in the direction you want to go. No more understeer
Why bother wasting your money on new tyres

The CTR is renowned for understeer so dont worry about it... you don't have a 'particular ' problem!
To combat it go get a decent geometry set up done and get some new tyres... the current RE040 is not a great tyre. Toyo's is a good choice and you will find the understeer will virtually dissapear! (due to the CTR's speed related steering you will always get some understear as it needs to catch up with your Schumacher style and speed! )
So hopefully after that your problem will be solved!
Disclaimer - what do I know!
Also check out www.type-r.org and ask the question there!

Thanks Plantie
It goes into Liverpool Honda for service next week, but i will Honda Tech boys on Monday, just to be sure. I will point out that this is warrenty work and i don't expect to see it billed on the service sheet.
Its come on very slowly, but i remember when i first got the car i could just turn it my road with a flick of the wrist, now a lot of lock is required.
Yes loved the Toyo's on the RS 1800 i had, only negative coments was on the Elise.
Cheers

EP3 is name which Honda refer to rather than name. EP3 is new CTR EK9 is old JDM CTR, DC2 old ITR, DC5 new ITR.
Mega your local Honda dealer won't have a laser alignment, best paying £50 or so quid, and getting it right.
CTR EVO nothing all hearsay, but 04 CTR will unveiled later this summer, new front, and rear styling changes, not 100% on engine spec, but don't expect big power increases if any.

IMHO Toyo's don't suit any Honda Type R I have if used on track, and found they tramlined too much on the road. I think the Potenza's are a good tyre, I find them very neutral.
All Honda's use Bridgestone's except some DC5's which use a Yoko, as many manufactures these days they set the suspension up to with a grade and make of tyre, changing them changes the handling charactistics, which I suppose can work both ways..

Type R...
You must be the only person I have ever heard say that the Potenza's are good... oh and mention track days in the same sentance! Potenza's are IMO only good if you want lots of miles out of them.
Otherwise... look at the Toyo's, S0-2's (if you can get them) S0-3's, Federalls or F1's.
My prefered choice would be S0-2, Toyo coming second.
Mega, Type-r is right the dealer wont have laser allignment which I would suggest you go for. If you can find a motorsport garage as ATS's f this world dont go for accuracy just tollerances...
Also think of what sort of a drive it is that you want... better handling??? good miles out of the tyre??? think about these two as they both cancel each other out. I have a more aggressive set up on mine but it doesn't wear to bad.
If you are in Berkshire then I know someone who is very good at this.... if not the Powerstation in cheltenham or maybe even TSL?? up north.

ABP in Nantwich is reasonably close and they can sell you revised geometry settings.
Toyo's and SO2's IMHO are the worst tyres I have ever used on track, and would never recommend them, destroyed a whole set of Toyo's in 1 Donnington day, the pattern moved, and the SO2 renowned for being wasted, due to overheating.
The Potenza offers a good balance, pretty sure they are the same as on my Elise S2, don't know nothing about Lotus, only 2 months experience

Type-r the S0-2's are the best tire I have ever used on track...
Ok they wear down quicker than a Potenza but the levels in grip cannot even be compared as the S0-2 wins by miles....
On this board the S0-2 was (not made anymore) recognised as one of the best tyres if not thee best...
Cant say the same about the S0-3 mind...
