I wondered if anyone had tried a Alfa JTD 156 sports wagon and if so what do you think ? is it a sensible (cheaper) alternative to my 02 WRX Sports wagon ? once I've learn't to slow down for corners !!

haven't tried the sport wagon but had a go in a saloon - they shift alright.
they've got a variable geometry turbo on them and pull like a train from low down coupled with the 2400cc engine. the vgt means there's little if any kick from the boost - you just look down at the speedo and think jeez - that nippy
comfortable / sporty (not scoob type sporty - think sports saloon instead)

Did you know the 157 is coming out next year - sleeker updated looks. Not much use if you want a car now I know but could be worth waiting?? On the other hand it might end up looking a bit "space age" from the pics I have seen about! Apparently it will share a lot of General Motors gear because of their alliance with Fiat/Alfa - again not sure if this is good or bad

2.4 JTD has crap fuel economy by all accounts, I remember reading that most owners used to get 28-35mpg out of them, when you look to get 40+mpg out of a BMW 330d. Not good news. Plus if its a company car check out the emissions 178g/km not that brilliant, exactly the same as a 330d, but the 330d has 54bhp and 78lbs ft on top. Overall not a very good effort, but they are supposed to make a very nice noise when being pressed on being 5-cyl engines. On the plus side the Alfa is dirt cheap to buy. One other thing to bear in mind is a new engine due soon will be the 1.9JTD 16v 140bhp in the Alfa range effectively making the current 2.4 obsolete.
