My son of 19 is pestering me to buy something and "share"it at local hill climb and sprint events.
I will not let him drive my Carrera 4 at these, so am considering getting something cheap.
Before suggesting anything, please bear in mind that we will onl do local events in N.E Scotland and therefore do not need the car to be a championship contender. Just a bit of fun plus some more fast driving experience for my son.
So, do I go for a bike engined single seater, an old Formula ford, a Caterham/Westfield or what. I do not mind towing it to the event (as long as I can fit a bar to the 993).
I am not wealthy, so maintenance must also be easy.

Dave

I compete in the HSA/Aldon Hillclimb Championship in my road going 1997 UK Impreza Turbo.

At this weekends event at Loton Park there were many different types of cars from Ferrari 355 Challenge to Mark 1/2 Escorts and Lotus Sunbeams.

Westfields are very very popular and a 1995/96 1800 engined car was for sale @ £8,500.00 yesterday.

Your budget is the most important thing, if I could justify to the wife I need a car for competition in addition the the Subaru, I would go for a nice Mark 2 Escort - rear wheel drive + ease of maintanence + plenty of parts available.

To get an idea have a look in the classified section of "Motoring News".

Richard.

I use my scoob for sprints, but Id take a look at the cats and then find a car that is likely to be competitive ie an Integra Type R would do quite well in the up to 1800 cat , or maybe a 106rallye 1.3 in the up to 1.3 road cars. Theres plenty that would do the job in the road going class

I know a few of the mx5 oc guys do this - you can pick up an early 1.6 (115bhp) with a few miles for circa £3000 that will still be strong and cheap to maintain - great handling and plenty of both NA and FI kits and handling improvement available aftermarket.

One importer on the south coast often imports turbo's (160+ bhp - 250bhp)and well set up na cars seeing approx 140bhp (1.6's) for very little cash - sometimes with full roll over etc.

Vary reliable and easy mechanicals to work on with good online (OC etc) support from other enthusiasts. Massive tuning/race scene in the states.

Find something which is naturally light - I'd be looking at the following...

MK2 Escort with Zetec
Manta with 2.0 DOHC from Cav/Calibra
Astra or Escort FWD with a 2.0 engine from something else

Doesn't sound great but... Cheap as chips to maintain or replace should you stack it. Modular design means stuff from the bigger cars in the range will fit. Most will take the biggest engine available from the manufacturer without too much hassle. Plenty at the breakers. Long established tuning business for all of them

You've got to be careful with engine choices. I compete in a Pug 205 GTi. I'd love to fit an Mi16 engine, but then I couldn't compete in Modified Production car Classes as that engine wasn't ever fitted to the 205 range.

oh yeah & the engine's f*cked right now.

Some grusome pictures here.

Luck ?
The only luck I've had recently is after I kicked the sump across the garage floor on Saturday. Lucky I didn't break my foot !

Piston, liner, and head knackered. Replacement head, pistons and liners to be collected tomorrow.

Might make New Brighton Sprint on Saturday, although I'll be amazed if I do !
