I heared it mentioned somewhere

Is the AM DB7 a re-bodied Jag XJS?

Not a bad thing as XJS's are cracking if you stiffen up the supension and stick in a manual box (Probably what aston did).

Just the thought of people paying £80K odd for something you can buy for £500 or less amuses me a little. Same build quality too

Yes, but look how elegant the styling of a DB7 is compared to, for example, an XK8.

Personally, I only intend to own one of each model of car, so I'd have to pass up a 6-pot DB7 (however cheap) as I'd want to have the V12.

I think the DB7 is based on the canned F-Type Jag.

Cool

Clarence is correct... XK8 is an offshoot of the same project iirc.

Of course, everyone knows that all Jags/Astons/etc are based upon the Soarer

sorry to dissapoint, but as far as it goes the only thing they share is a modified xjs chassis. Everything else is different. I used to own an xjs and heard this before.

Ill have everyones sympathy after they read my little rant on my website!

http://users.aber.ac.uk/cpc9/xjs.html

Funny, i was just reading another thread and had a big blah about beware professionals, made me think of the company that supposedly inspected my jag before i bought it.

Funnily enough, aside from the money I lost i dont regret owning it - I dont think theres many people who can say theyve owned a 300+ bhp car when they are 20.

Could do a lot worse than an XJS. I remember when Autocar picked one up for £50. Not many other 150 mph cars can be got for that money

I also bought a Jaguar when I was 20. A 1985 XJ6 4.2 Sovereign.
THE MOST UNRELIABLE CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED.
Within the first week of owning it, the windows/mirrors/locks stopped working. The second week, the alternator belt snapped.
Third week, the wipers went. Fourth week, the trip computer went.
While all these were happening, consumption was around 6-9mpg with normal driving. The coolant looked like oil and the oil looked like coolant.

I've also owned two Lancias, a Thema and a Delta and they were much more reliable than the Jag

Funny you should say that XT, we have 4.2 '85 soveriegn parked outside our family Garage for about 6months now

Owners taht p155ed off with it he dumped it there and said fix in your spare time, and I'll have it back when it runs right.

Got it running about right a few weeks back. Was about to phone the owner for the good news, but then it packed in again!!

They are'nt that bad, My dad has an '82 XJS HE. OK its a pig, owned it for 18 odd years now, still goes, stops etc. A/c has a mind of its own, and the electic aerial goes up and down on its own when it rains with the ignition off!! Good cruiser, and ended up looking like a right tit when I did a 180 instead of a powerslide! 120mph in 2nd gear too and oil surge under heavy braking at 80odd is not clever either!

Most of your latter day serious sports cars are based on my Soarer, which in turn borrowed heavily from the Robin Reliant, the only major difference being that the front wheel was split into two on the Soarer to increase stability during blowouts.

I have had 37 blowouts at speeds of over 270 mph. The slacktive suspension on my Soarer means I can usually continue to drive the car normally for the next 12,000 miles until the blown tyre finishes its normal life.

The DB7 uses the Jaguar F-Type chassis, a modifified XJS platform.

Additionally to the DB7's original Engine is a Jag motor with some Tom Walkinshaw Racing tweaks (shorter stroke, supercharged).

It is still a low spec motor tho... redlines at 6000,

This rather 'old tech' design stems from the 70's means that the relatively petite DB7 weighs in at almost 1800kgs, the larger more modern Soarer equivalent weighs in at 1500/1600kg, such is the penalty for 'old tech'.

About 185bhp/tonne...

That was the DB7s' its down-fall, 60 in 6 secs was good but nothing special for the money asked...

------------------------------------

The XK8 is also founded on an XJS chassis using the Sub-frame designs from Toyota... (the same as on the Soarer)

The DB7 and XK8 structurally are close cousins, tho not as close as the DB7/XJS inbreeding.
