Request on behalf of a mate.
What is the quickest and fastest & good handling car up to £20k.
And it MUST pass the following criteria.
No more than 5 years old.
Unmodified.
Reliable (no tvrs!).
Not an Evo or Scoob.
RWD is a preference.

add a couple of grand and get probably the FASTEST thing around, an ultima
Performance compared to a maclaren F1
Never driven one myself, just drooled at them, i did manage to pass one at donninton once, but was begin driven by a pleb, and nearly took us both out,...well he actually proceeded to slide into the kitty litter
Big beefy V8 sounds awesome, close to 200mph
Given the choice id have one o these, and a 100 quid crappy run around any day )

3yr old E55 AMG - £18,000
Then spend a couple of hundred and remove the 155mph limiter. Handles in a sort of big saloon type way - but who cares, it'll take you, three of your biggest mates & and all your golf gear, fishing gear, football kit and half your living room to the bad side of 180mph!! In complete double glazed silence!! Just keep aside a few thousand every month to replace the rear tyres.

just had a look on autotrader - 5 year old e55's are25 grand. 3/4 year old ones with 100,000+ miles go for 18 grand. who would pay 18 grand for a hundred thousand miler car? yes, e55, brilliant, cant eat the miles etc, but you are starting off with a 100,000 miles AND paying 18k for it!

Catflap - could you point me at where you can get a £22k newish Ultima with close to 200mph worth of engine (guess that must mean about 500bhp) in it? Or are you talking just for the kit?
There was a Can-am for sale at Stoneleigh on Monday, which would fit the criteria (5.7 litre Chevvy with >400bhp). £54k. And still good "bang for your buck" at that price.
Back to original question. Something like a Caterham Superlight R would fit the bill - will mess with very serious stuff on a track - but you might worry with reliability and might not suit - in which case, I'd probably go with the M3.

Join the Yahoo BEC list, there is a chap planning on building them fro 26k next year, he’s currently producing a load of 7 type fireblade cars fro 5k, These ultimas will be brand new, but im unsure of spec
If you looking now…
In this months kit car you’ll find ……drool
1996 4 litre v8 in orange for 22k
or an ultima spyder with only 1100 dry miles in purple for 21995
There are few others but closer to 40k
Or you can have my megablade for 13k (ill start saving the rest for an ultima LOL)
Anyone kno w the weight of one of these things? I would imagine they are much much lighter than a merc, with looks and originality and performance to die for (just my opinion, but why would any ono want to own a merc over an ultima, sure the ultima has 2 seats, but life is full of compromises, and you only live once, surly you can get a diesel to drive the boring bits to work and then unleash the bright orange ultmia after work or at weekends/track days yummy-no disrespect to the merc, lord knows they are awesome, and far out of my price range, but the ultima just seems that little bit more special)
There is no way a merc can touch it on looks thats for sure

Weight of an ultima is typically around 950kg, depending on engine etc. According to Evo mag, 925kg for the 540bhp can am they tested, 990 for the GTR. (Both with ~540bhp). So about half the weight of most Mercs.
1996 Ultima fails the 5 year criteria, and I suspect it "only" has 200-300bhp. Will be interesting to see what these £26k ones do - I could be tempted. Think I'd go with about 400bhp of small block chevvy as 450bhp/tonne is adequate and you'd have torque to die for.

There we go
Yahoo is a pain for locating groups
yeh your right 2-300 bhp would not be the same, 450bhp sounds just right )
In terms of style/bang for buck/originality and sheer exotica, nothing suggested so far comes close in my opinion
Yep I plan on having one myself one day

OOO 6r4 now that’s an interesting car have to agree on this one
But a cozzy? over a 900kg 5-600 bhp ultima? even if it was as fast (doubtful) in a straight line, the ultima should surly (just guessing, but due to down force and race chassis,) be quicker. Plus just a little more interesting than a cozzy, just my humble opinion.
Vs.
