Mum finishes University in two months time after 4 years hard graft. To celebrate starting work again she is looking to get rid of her trusty P-reg Mondeo to upgrade to something with a little more class.
She requires, in the following order:
1. Fuel Economy - probably diesel but will consider high-MPG petrols.
2. Able to carry 3-4 persons in relative comfort, 4/5 doors not a neccesity though.
3. Competent handling
4. Reasonably quick
It doesn't look as though she wants to break the 20k barrier although i imagine she could be pushed a little over for the right car.
Here's whats on the table so far.
BMW 330D Sport (my suggestion)
Example:
Age - 2002 (51)
Miles - 3,250
Price - £23,495
BMW 320tD SE Compact (caught her eye on the way out of the BMW dealership)
Example:
Age - 2002 (02)
Miles - 6,952
Price - £16,995
Mercedes C-Class Sports Coupe 220 CDi (i grabbed some brochures from the Mercedes dealership and Mum seems quite keen on this one....)
Example:
Age - 2001 (51)
Miles - 15,0000
Price - £19,995
Anyway, i/we are looking for more suggestions that fit the criteria stated above. Mum'll be doing mega miles when she starts work so fuel economy is the most important factor. There is no preference between buying either new or used, a good deal is all that is required. i.e. we were offered 27k on a brand new 'old style' (no 6-speed or 10 spoke wheels) 330D Sport which was nice.
Looking forward to the suggestions.....!
Edited to add the correct Mercedes...

Carl,
Does it have to be of alien origin? ...
How about some home grown product?... For example MG ZS or ZT, or wait a little longer for the RWD ZT V8s .... ZT 260 (soon) or 380/5? (later)....
In any event, get her to at least have a demonstration in an MG ZT or the smaller ZS180 which is a bit nippy and handles nicely if handling is high on her priority list. She may be pleasently surprised. .....

VW Golf GT TDi (150)
Sensible MPG around 44 mpg but has been known to do 59 mpg.
Looks not to bad either, sits on a set of 17" BBS as Standard. Very torquey, blows away the petrol GTi and the 1.8T.
Fully loaded 5 door, Air Con, Electric everything, Traction control, blah, blah £16,499
Having said all that, you can get a damn decent Scoob for the same sort of money.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone, i'm about to check out some of the more suitable ones.
Couple of things i might add, my old dear isn't the average 'woman driver'/'Mum'. She wants a car that handles well and has sufficent power to take advantage of that. Anything that doesn't meet either of those criteria (along with ye olde MPG one) just won't be considered.
She also wants something desireable, hence the BMWs and Mercedes in the initial post - i'm afraid a Nissan Micra just isn't going to cut it.
LPG is an excellent idea and one i don't think has been considered as yet, will be sure to mention it to her, thanks.
As much as she loves my MY98 PPP she won't be buying an Impreza, although i have suggested it many a time. Tis seriously lacking in the MPG department.

Being a Skoda owner, I'm naturally biased.
The Laurin & Klement Octavia comes in a 1.9 TDI with 110 HP for £15655 OTR list price. Full leather, climate control, all electrics, 6 stack CD, sunroof, cruise, etc... or the vRS returns 30ish MPG, and has some serious performance (not Scooby performance, but it'll see off most stuff on the road).
For a bit more style, there's the Skoda Superb Comfort - 1.9 TDI PD 130hp £17,700.00 OTR list price. For more kick, could go for the 2.5 V6 TDI 155hp, but it's more expensive at £20,400 OTR list price.
You get loads of standard kit because it's a Skoda, but it's about 30% cheaper than an equivalent Passat. Depends if she can handle the stigma...

I'd back up the Golf GT TDi idea - my mum has one and its great. Her's is a 130 with lots of goodies (16" wheels, leather, climate, 6CD etc.) and still only cost about £16k brand new. (EU Import)
Sky high image and residuals to make Subaru drivers weep (sorry but its true :-) )
In the real world the 130 is pretty much the same pace as the 150, so I wouldnt go spending mad amounts more for one. Make sure it has sports suspension though - makes a big difference.
I wouldn't recommend the Merc Sport Coupe - its not very good to drive and the only redeeming feature is the badge, poor value too.

My mum just bought a celica 190 a few months back £14K...well under budget
Bit small in the rear seats but the boot is massive
Leather seats, eleccy this and that, 6 speed, sony double din stereo.
Good on fuel, seeing it's a 1.8 30mpg is easily achived, unless you drive like a loon and use that lovely 7K+ rpm power band Oh, it it HAS to be thrashed to a inch of it's life to make shift - and it does shift, without doubt it wouldn't be too much behind an impreza (yet to proove it though )
funnily enogh she was after a BMW 330...just a coupe petrol instead
But the difference in price and a little falling out over a deposit over a dud car at the dealers put her off.
