540 to E Class?
540 is getting to costly on fuel so poss trading to a 530d.....but also thinking about an E class 320 estate so i can fit the kids in the boot seats.
i know it wont be as sporty as the BM but anyone had one?
i'd be looking at a 2000-2001 car with 50k on it...they seem to hold their money well- even the delaers have cas with 100k + that BMW dealers wouldnt touch.

We love our 320 CDi Estate. Get the Avantgarde for more "involved" handling - probably not as good as the BM in that department but I've never driven the BM so not in the best position to comment.
320 CDi = 205 bhp, 500 Nm torque so relatively lively but very civilised for a diesel. Try to get one with Xenons and 7 seat option as these hold their money well. I paid £17k for a late 2000 wil 70k miles and FSH, pristine condition (private sale).

If you're going from a Beemer 540, then perhaps you should think of an E430? Having said that, I'm not sure that you can get a 430 estate so therefore you rather fortuitously end up with the E55 AMG Estate as your option. Fantastic - now you have a 350 bhp family estate with some serious poke. Only thing is that you'll have to be married to both your local tyre dealer and petrol station proprietor as they are hardly the last word in economical motoring.
I was in a E320 turbo diesel taxi in Germany last month - car looked about a '99 and it had 560,000 kilos on the clock (about 350,000 miles). Obviously a bit rough around the edges but still tight and not a single rattle or squeek. Very impressive.

Anyway, I haven't driven a 320 CDI, but my pal's Dad has one and it is extremely comfy. His is the 320cdi estate avantgarde. It has all the toys, is v. quick and v. comfortable.
I guess you should go and drive one and see what you think.
And you can get a 430 estate, they are just v.rare - do a search on Autotrader, I think this week there are about 8 nationally...
All the best,
Jamie
