Porsche Cayenne..........

I think I prefer the V10 diesel Toerag to the Cayenne. When they put the V10 in the Porsche (a diesel Porsche!) then that will be a vehicle of some interest.
As an interesting side note some of the Porsche boys here are chopping in their 911's for Cayennes- shows how interested they are in sports cars!

I think you missed the point or maybe I wasn't very clear. The car is in itself a compromise. They make the 911 which is a sports car this SUV thing is a very clever attempt at making an inherently unwieldy vehicle handle and drive like a "sports" car. Anyone who wants a truly sporty porsche will stick to a 911, the mob who couldn't care less about the sports angle will buy a Cayenne. As some of the guys in my office are doing. They couldn't care less about the handling but my guess is they would prefer a diesel version that does more than 12MPG.

and those who have a family will also choose a diesel over a petrol eating monster. Also anyone who can aford one of these can also afford to run 2 or more cars.

I think some people would still buy the V10 Toerag rather than a V10 Porsche (if they did one), simply because the Porsche is ugly
Also, how would a hypothetical V10 Cayenne be priced?

It looks like some genetic mutant after a liason between a 911 and some sad huge 4*4 dollop, at least its quick but what a horrible thing to look at.

I can attest to how quick they are. I came out of roadworks on A3 on Koeln to Frankfurt road tonight in my 523i(no speed machine), however one was 300m behind me and went from 100kmph to who knows what in little or no time. It went past me like a bloody jet. Very very impressive considering its bulk.

Ugly as sin and I can't stand them. However, I will admit they are very clever and I can also see why Porsche felt the need to develop one. If, by making these SUVs, Porsche sell more cars and make more profit which continues to allow them to make outstanding sports cars then I'm all for it
Developing cars of the calibre of the 911 isn't cheap. Consider that all of Porsche's main rivals are backed by large multi national companies (Lamborghini - Audi, Ferrari - Fiat, Aston Martin - Ford etc).
Porsche is one of the most profitable car companies in the world, however, it doesn't have the turnover or resources of the bigger players to constantly invest the kind of money needed to develop new cars. So it has a choice, give up and sell out to one of the big boys or make a car with a wider market appeal, use its name to sell it at a premium - take the extra money and invest this in making proper sports cars
Porsche have been quite clever about this - after all a lot of the development costs of the Cayenne were shared with VW. So in car production terms, Porsche has actually developed the Cayenne for a lot less than usual. This all goes to help the profit margin.
If it means that Porsche survive, I'm all for them making SUVs
