Peugeot 205 GTi's
#1
Thinking of buying one of these as a bit of a project for summer. Something to have a bit of fun in and do up. Either model. I know quite a few people on here have owned these and wondered if people could give me some pointers. What should I look for when buying, what tends to go wrong etc.
Also does anybody know a buying guide for these on the web?
Cheers

Peugeot sport club should be of some use.
I had a 1.9, it was a right laugh. I'm yet to drive another car with power so low down like the Pug, my Scoob included.

Yep I've got one.
Have a look on
www.205gtidrivers.com
and their forum
http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/
This forum is more specifically 205 related rather than "generic" Peugeots on PeugeotSport Club web site.
Thanks
Mark

I've got one too after having the scoob - nice to be able to work on a car myself again!
As the guys above have posted - those forums are the best place to check out, however look for cracks above the rear windows - sign the car has been worked very hard Get a 1.9 - if you go 1.6 you'll only start adding parts of the OneNine anyway - and if you are tuning the engine its a better place to start from - or just drop in an Mi16 lump
And another good excuse to post:

Agree with Brun about the low down power too - its much better than my scoob or GTi-6 ever was, it just pulls from 1k brilliantly
Also try www.peugeot-gti.net

Low down power ????
Don't have any of that ! Doesn't come on cam to around 4500 and revs to about 8000.
Pulls well though with its Mi16 box and REALLY low ratio final drive

I had a 205 GTI 1.6- as said earlier in the thread go for the 1.9 as its far better. That said I had an interesting little tussle with a (then new) MY2000 UK scooby. He came out of nowhere at extremely high speed as I drove in a long line of slow moving traffic. Annoyed at being tailgaited by the aggressive Scoob I pulled off to drive down an extremely narrow twisty road leading through the gorge down into Cheddar (locals will know the road- it's one of the best in the UK). Scoob decides to follow and obviously wants to have some fun. This is an extremely steep incline so power is not an issue. The scoob was left for dead!!! He was really trying too- using all the road and understeering/oversteeering wildy from lock to lock! I reached the bottom a good 30 secs before he did. When we pulled up at the bottom we both got out and he refused to believe that the Pug was a 1.6 and bog standard. These cars have the best front wheel chassis I have ever driven and are immense fun. I've seen loads being punted round the 'ring too and they wasted theorietically much faster cars.
The only probs are the build quality and hot starting problems/dodgy electrics common to 1.6+1.9's. Also my engine eventually exploded about a month after I sold it to my neighbour!

as for soft top - depends if you can put up with scuttle shake and the sacrifice in handling ability - just get one with a sliding sunroof Oh, and the CTi's (soft top) are group 14 too

CJB if you get a good one you wont regret it.
There are some really nice ones still out there. I had a Miami Blue 1.6 when I was 20 and it still remains one of my favorite drivers cars to this day.

I had an H reg Black 1.9. Perfect spec-No sunroof(stronger shell, less weight), No cat, 1.6 box-thoroughly reccomended-125mph on the red line in 5th.
Best bits? Beating a 285Bhp Cossie on a wet road one night and
visiting the Golf GTI owners day at Kames in Scotland and coming 5th fasted on the track day(car was standard apart from box and a 57i)-up against 16valvers, VR6's, G60,s etc)
Worst bits- You have to be commited, they do bite. Oh so sweet if you do get it right though.
The most involving road car I've driven, and that includes my quattro.
