Hello all.
I am selling my pride and joy (WRX) to a friend.
I will be on the look out for an Sti 5.
In the mean time I need a cheap run around for six months or so.
I will be doing big miles across country most days.

What would you recommend for £1,000 ish
Fiesta? Micra?

Basicaly I want something simple, reliable that I can just chuck petrol and oil into and forget about and sell for a few hundred quid after I have finished with it.

What do you think.
Best wishes
Steve.

Golf GTi 8v Mk2. A grand should get a gooder. Always an entertaining drive, should be utterly solid and reliable, average 35-40 mpg, sell it for what you paid for it.

I did something very similar, sold my MY2000, ordered a Bugeye and bought a good 205GTi 1.9 as a stop gap. Soon found out that the Bugeye was no-where near as entertaining as the 205 for 10 times the money, so sold it and went back to the 205, a happier and wealthier man. I kept the Bugeye for 8 weeks. Still have the Pug 18 months later, and no sign of boredom yet

I use to have a 1.6 Gti years back and I must say that it was a very very good drive.

Do you think it would be cheap to run, in terms of reliability?
If it goes wrong can it be quite cheap to fix?

Thanks
Steve

Will also look at golfs.

Try a SAAB - reliable and fast - bought mine for £900, worked perfectly 8 months so far - mind you I did blow a fuse once..

Citroen Xantia. Unloved used, but you get excellent comfort, and 40mpg from the turbo diesels. Lots on ebay for about a grand, go have a look for yourself. And you'll find most have full/good services histories.

Depends really. Mk2 Golfs and 205's are old motors now, and there is obviously no guarantee that they won't break.

Golfs feel solid and unbreakable, and generally are. Pugs just FEEL flimsy and fragile, but IMHO are just as tough. My 205 is 14 this year and has only ever required basic maintainance throughout its life.

Have to say that if my life depended on it, I would put my faith in a Golf GTi with 150K rather than a BMW with 100K. I have just sold my lovely 57k miler GTi Mk2 to a guy who has had one from new and simply cannot find anything old or new to replace it with. He is keeping his and aiming for 250K miles, and wants mine for his next 10 years of motoring life. Cheap motoring when you think about it.

Thumbs up

Ford Ka anyone?
40-50mpg, group 2 insurance, and you can pick second hand P/R reg ones (mid to high mileage) for between £750 - £2,000
They'll help you save more money in no time!
Not very 'street cred' but they are damn cheap to run.

Plenty of mondeo's out there for a grand so lots of choice, would get you an 80k motor in most cases, quite a few rough examples available though but mine cost 1300 quid and 640 quid sorted it out with just a recommendation to have the rear brakes sorted at the next service (the 640 included a service, drive belt, cambelt, front discs and pads and some other minor bits like brake fluid change).
Get 35mpg out of her and no problems

Tony

I just sold my WRX and picked up a micra 1.0LX as a runaround till i find another sports car. It's pretty gutless but it's only insurance group 3 and does almost 40miles to the gallon

Engine is bulletproof and has a timing chain as opposed to a belt so less likely to go bang. Colour coded bumpers and mirrors, alloys, immobiliser, bright clean interior, metallic paint, 80k miles. Only faults are a few minor scrapes on the bodywork, a loose heatshield and it needs new wiper blades. Not bad for 900 quid. It's actually a nice little car to drive around in. It's probably the most unstressing car i've driven. I'd highly recommend it if you want something cheap to get you by for a few months. A lot easier to sell on later than a high mileage golf or BMW.

edited cuz i forgot to mention... car is a '95 model
