Any opinions out there?
Im going through my monthly "shall I sell the scoob and buy a cheap workhorse which the local peasants wont bother keying, wont get road rage from other drivers, and wont have a nervous breakdown if I leave it somewhere, and have a lower fuel bill and insurance premuim??!" Dilemma
My parents have an annivesary edition GTi (97 model) and it does look nice, if a little sluggish. Interior is good, and feels very solid.
I know the VR6 isn't comparable to a scoob, as they are completely different, but mildly tuneable and blends in with the crowds.
Quite like the highline, has to be black I think
Opinions welcome! (used the search, but not much there)

The mk3 Golf is great car if not a little dated now. Still nice to drive with good residuals. Your right you can't compare it to a Scoob but it's a completley different car. Very reliable, easily tuned and still has a great image. If thats the sort of car your looking for then I don't personally think you can beat it!

Between 7-8 grand should get you a nice Highline..Body,interior are bullet proof but the engine isnt that strong and fuel comsumption can be in the low 15's if you push the car..otherwise a great car IMO.

Drove my sisters VR6 when she first got it, i had an MY00 at the time. I was very disappointed with its performance, i honestly thought there was something wrong with it!
Everyone else thought it was great.
I think that we've all been spoilt with scooby performance, and will find almost any sensible(ish) cars performance disappointing and boring.
I've got a P1 now so i've truly spoilt myself.......and i'm thinking "what next?!"

Hmm, thanks all.
I haven't tried one yet but will be dissapointed if its slow. Might look at an Integra type R too.

My Mum has a VR6 and I still drive it every now and again, and it is very quick, you can totally blow away the majority of things on the road, but I would suggest dropping and stiffening the shocks and a quickshift, apart from that it's a quality car.

I had a VR6 Highline before my current car. It's a midly tuned V6 but it's nice to drive with a lot of low down torque. It's got a great engine if a little underpowered by todays standards. The Highline's got all the extras and the build quality is superb. Got £5200 trade-in for my 96 with 98k on the clock a year ago.

Thank all, will keep thinking!
I would definately have to drop it and have some BBS 17's on there for starters. I know people with VR6 Corrado's, and the induction kit roar is monster.

I had a MY93 VR6, fitted it with a Magnex BB and a 57i Induction kit and 17" BBS Alloys , also managed to get hold of a full highline interior.
Nice cars, smooth power from the V6, poor fuel goes without saying, sounded fantastic though.
Bad time come selling it though, nobody wanted to even view it, ended up trading it for £4,200 with 72k and FVWSH (that was 3 years ago aswell )

Mark, hi there!
I drove a VR6 golf many years ago, put around 30 miles or so on a mates one and to be honest i was not all that impressed with the performance as std and i was in a Astra 1.8 at the time.
What i do/did like was the build quality and the fact the Golfs are 'classless' cars, could be driven about by a judge or a dustman if you know what i mean.
Can be easly 'tweaked' and it is a fab strong engine. handling can be improved for little outlay, springs/struts readily avaliable
As for being left alone a i believe a lot of top end Golfs get knicked and stripped for spares for lesser Golfs so may be a worry.
Nice cars and bullet proof if looked after.

Thanks for the info Paul, most helpful.
I think if I did go for it i'd take the badges off etc (stealth mode )
The tweaking bit is good too, the basic pipe and filter mods seem like fairly cheap power... Springs would sort out the handling, my parents have a GTi anniversary (P plate) as a 2nd car, and that handles quite well.
I would really miss the scoob but it would be a welcome change to park it in town / outside cinemas etc and not be worried.
Hmm, must find nitrous

test drove an M plate a couple or three years ago.
very disappointed with it. really thought it was going to be reasonably rapid - it was not. it felt very front heavy. the interior was quite nice - and that's it.
really wanted to like it - and really came away thinking - Is that it????

Mark, i have a Mk3 16v.
Which i bought after testing VR6's.
Like others on this thread, i was underwhelmed by the VR6 performance. And if you're using it as a daily workhorse, which i assume means round-town trips etc, you'll be annoyed with the poor fuel consumption.
The Mk3 8v GTi is also disappointing, it just isn't that quick. The 16v is in my opinion the best compromise and i haven't regretted buying one yet. If you want extra performance, get a decent exhaust and a decent set of shock absorbers, and it'll be within a hair's whisker of a VR6 on the road, with none of the downsides.

I think they're a bit soft. Not enough driver involvement.
Much prefer the MkII or MkIV. The Mk III is reasonably quick, but in terms of tuning I think the engine is a little too heavy. I liked the Mk II G60, but if that's too raw for your needs then how about a Mk IV.

Hi Mark
I currently run a mk3 VR6 and think it would have been a far better car if it had'nt replaced my scooby. Performance wise we've been spoiled and most things are gonna feel slugish afterwards.
They do feel very front heavy and i've tried to improve things with lowered springs but it still wallows around quite a bit.
They are well built and on a run i regularly get 39 mpg, parts are pretty cheap now and theres loads of places specialising in golf kit too.
Like anything else theres good points and bad points to them. Pity your as far away, you'd have been more than welcome to try out mine to see if it was what your after, especially as i'm thinking of selling it!!!!
Cheers m8, KGB.

Hmm, quite mixed reviews. I could afford to keep the scoob (tarted up MY99 ) but could save a fortune on running costs / insurance etc... I do 40 miles per day to work and back Not as much as some I guess.
Might have to live with the fact not much else is as quick. Just had a tek2.5 too!
Ta for the offer KGB, bit far though, as you say.
I may look at the 16V MK3 as you mentioned TelBoy. They look damn cheap so I could go for a cheap one and sort the suspension and add the Nitrous, care of PE. Always wanted nitrous!
Thanks again all, will keep thinking. Every time I get in the scoob, I change my mind.

Another Mk3 16v owner here. I test drove a few Mk3 8v's and VR6's and found them vastly different. 8v was not much qicker than the XR2i I had just sold, and the VR6 sounded sweet, but I couldn't afford as new a car as I was looking for. Stumbled across a low mileage Mk3 16v and it blew me away!
Since buying it I have fitted a Remus back box and a K&N 57i. It was rolling roaded in September at 170.5bhp, so with it being lighter weight than the VR6, I'm probably a fraction quicker than them... and with the Koni adjustable suspension kit fitted, the handling has been transformed!!
Can't recommend the 16v enough.

You couyld do a lot worse than I have . I bought a Charade GTti which you can pick up for between £500 and 3000. They will do silly mpg and are very tunable to be very, very qucik. We're talking mega grunt and plenty as fast as most Imprezas. Handling might not be as good but its a hoot to drive. Plus they sound great , like a 911 and you'll get daft mpg and nobody wants to nick them either.
They'll be at least one down at the Sunseeker in a few weeks and might have mine with me too.
