Question

A guy I work with wants to buy a "sports car" before he has to buy a MPV for the kids
It needs to do about 200 miles per week so reliabilty is important. He originally wanted an Lotus Esprit but I talked him out of that. He doesn't like 944's (he is odd) and E30 M3's are a bit boy racer for him (told you he's odd ).
Any other ideas? He knows nothing about cars but wants something that looks cool on a budget of £5000 and won't lose too much in a year.

How about an old TVR wedge? Big, Noisy and a "proper" sports car.

LMAO @ Dracoro

A Nissan 200SX would be a reasonable 'sports car' for that sort of money, and it would certainly be reliable.

Face it for £5K he will not get a proper reliable true sports car.... and if he does how will he cope with the maintainance costs on approx 12K miles a year

He could get a hot hatch or an older sports saloon..... Might even get an early Scooby if he was lucky...

As for a TVR and reliable they can be I know

I'm in the same boat. I need a sports car for 5k that i can use for work..........

I decided on the 300ZX TT. Very, very fast but pricey to run, decent reliability, but i still wouldn't touch one without a warranty. Can get a 60,000 mile 90/91 TT for between 5 and 6k.

Other options i thought about .......

MR2 turbo. Very, very fast, reasonable running costs, ultra reliable (but only 2 seats).

S13 200SX, Very quick, very reliable, cheaper again to run that the MR2. 3k will get a mint low mileage one and 2K on mods will see it well past the 250BHP mark. Or alternatively keep the 2K and put it towards the running costs.
