Go to a decent book shop and get the "Porsche, The 911 Story." By Paul Fiere. It has everything you need to know about the 911 all the way up to the new 996 models.

I've got the Paul Frere book and the detail is borderline ****! Not the best bedtime read but thorough and informative.

If you just want the basics, pick up a copy of "GT Purely Porsche" magazine. They have a data section at the back which should be a good starting point.

P.S. This is a new magazine with excellent photography but occaisionally poorly written features and editorial but it's getting better...
