I was thinking of buying one when I got back from the states and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with them. Done quite a bit of homework ie. Walkers / John Whalley etc. but never spoke to anyone who has actually owned one. IT will be used as a daily car so reliability is in question.

I had 2 in the 90's, an evo1 and then a 2.

Fantastic cars with character, great handling, super steeering feel, and awe inspiring loooks and road prescence. But performance is a little weak in a straight line by today's standards, if unmodified. 210-215 bhp and they were Italian horses which are never as strong as German ones or Japanese if you get my meaning! Evo2's run out of power after 5000 rpm due to the small turbo and the cats and top speed is poor as a result - certainly not the 137mph that Lancia claimed.

Cost loads to run every day or not, bushes go all the time as do drop links, obligate servicing by specialists only is never cheap. rust now a problem too.

But the real killer emerging now they are all older is the stress fractures in the body shell, which is very un-stiff anyway, these appear round rear strut housing, front door surrounds at anterior upper and lower corners, tail gate corners etc, I got rid of my evo2 when these developed I d just had enough of pouring money into it.

Saw one for sale the other day in Blackheath and for about 30 seconds was hankering after it and talking myself into phoning the number on the notice in its window but then saw sense.

Sorry to sound negative but you need to know what your getting into!

Adrian

Richard some more things I remember:

evo 1 s are faster as standard despite what the official stats say. More modifialble too due to bigger turbo, no cats and electronic reasons too I think.

evo 2 s have much nicer interiors with the big seats, better steering wheel etc and are better screwed together - they were virtually hand made at a special factory in Chivasso or somewhere, whereas the evo 1s were from the normal Lancia production line.

I'd get an evo 1 if it were me and stick some evo 2 seats in it.

Ive seen one advertised by Kankku in Yellow for around 15k with 20000 mile on the clock. Is this to much? Was also thinking of a 260bhp upgrade from John Whalley's. It's either that or go back to STi ownership!

Firstly lancia delta Integrale!!Yes well were do we begin.

Here would be good. http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=evoforum&lgnDST=http%3A%2F%2Fforu ms%2Edelphiforums%2Ecom%2Fevoforum%2Fstart

As a few valid points have been made cracks etc here are some more.
All cars have weak points jap and italian

The only car to go home (broken)on a trailer at the lancia track day last year was a sti subaru Oooops new engine suit you sir! and it belonged to a friend not impressed car now sold

As for the grale,I have owned mine for nearly three years fitted polly bushes and rebuilt the gearbox, amongst other things Done plenty of track days no problems.

First advice if you consider buying one get it instected buy a specialist as the bills will mount up if it hasnt been maintained properly and take someone along who knows a little about them to point out the bad bits,Also dont take a pocket full of cash as you will probably come home in it!

Thumbs up

I've got an Evo 1,had it from new.Love it to bits, only done 53k kilometers.Has been very reliable.Since warrenty ran out do most of servicing myself and use specialists for the more complex stuff.
Have not had any stress related probs at all.Just recently noted small rust bubbles under front windscreen rubber, but thats all.Eats front tyres, front bushes(got powerflex now).
Going to get Evo2 seats soon.
Go to Walkers,Whalley or Barry Waterhouse for advice and pay for the best available you wont regret

Richard you can also try keith at auto integrale for very resonable prices.

Get yourself onto evocorner (oh and take your handbag you'll need it)read the faq section for all problems and fixes and look at the whalley site for info on the different models and spec.

Good luck and if you wanted to have a look at a few examples you would be welcome to come along to a meet that is held monthly in sussex if thats not to far.

Wink

I had a red intergrale 16v 300 bhp very very fast and enjoyed every day of it until i blew the head gasket/strip 4 teeth on the cambelt but never bent a valve.
Also had to have a transfer box bearing.

All in all cost me about £1500 in 6 months and buy then i had no confidence in the car.

If you can get one which is standard (evo 3)with low miles its worth buying these cars are very nice classic`s.

Richard.

Great cars- but not really suitable as a daily driver - buy one and keep it in the garage for weekends and track days.

Buy an old banger for the day to day stuff

I let mine go for a few months and when they finally took the windscreen out it needed plating! It had spread all along under the rubber !

Cool

I've owned an Evo 1 for the last 3yrs and have never stopped smiling. It is THE homologation special bar none. If you haven't driven one, you should try it. The handling (and especially the steering) is unbelievable and a zillion miles from what you lot are used to (and I have driven 22bs and WRXs before anyone asks). But the bills to keep it on the road are unbelievable too. Set aside at least £2k a year to maintain properly. If you try to cut corners it will bite you on the ****.

Evo 1s are faster than Evo 2s 'cos Lancia fitted a smaller turbo (didn't need to homologate the big one after 1991).

Don't go to Walkers, for God's sake. Go to Kankku or Evo Engineering in London.

Check out the Lancia Forum (my home forum) on
http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/nav/start.asp?webtag=evoforum

And come up to Donington on Feb 16th - there are a load of us out on track, and you can see us humiliate the Scoobs & Mitsis. I might even offer you a ride.

Personally, I've had no dealings with them (nor would I). But I know several bitter owners who have paid top dollar for cars with faults that Walkers subsequently refused to fix and then got arsey about. The majority of Grale owners do not rate them at all. Check Evo Forum for more gossip/libel.

This months Classic and Sportscar had (in the auction bit) a tidy G reg Grale go through for 775 quid, peanuts really but could end up costing 5 grand to put right I suppose.
