Pretty beefy as standard and remember the engine can be chipped and tuned further should you wish to do so. You could make it really quick but not alter the exterior looks and then go bait some scoobs, etc

I'm thinking of trading in the the MY00 as i have to travel 120 miles round trip per day.
I know that the 1.8t is pretty tuneable but i don't want to sit in a golf/seat/skoda etc

For a FWD car it handles well, well built not bad to look at, great brakes, steering average. Will feel slow compared to the scoob, but then again 99% of road cars do anyway.
Drove the A3 ansd S3, liked them bothe, bought the scoob down to out and out performance.
I rate the A3's and they last for ever!

I've had a A3 1.8 (not the T) for 3 years now, well screwed together, no rattles etc, the paintwork is superb. Interior is a little bland and not as nice as the Golf, extras are stupid money, brakes are very good and you can drive it all day and get out feeling refreshed. The boot is small and it's cramped in the back for adults.
It does have good points though, it's obviously the top of the pile, Golf,Seat, and has that prestige about it.
But the long and short of it is "it's not exciting !" which is why I have an MY00 in my garage waiting for the day the A3 goes back to the lease company (only 20 days left).

i have an A4 1.8T sport which is being sold this week, same engine as the A3, supposed to be 150bhp but feels more like 100bhp.
Can't feel the turbo coming in like on the scoob, because of the engine/turbo? the d/v has to be a recirculating type (plastic bosch as standard) and you can't fit an atmos for the tsschhh because it fouls things up and make the car run baaaad.
The quality of audis is spot on but as mentioned "its a bit bland" nice milemuncher but no head turner

A3 is very nice and very tuneable - see AMD (auto-amd)'s web site to see how far you can go with a tuner of the best reputation.
I had an expensive, new (£26k) Audi for 2 years which was all the things that Audi are good at and renowned for.
Next car I bought ? A used 99MY, for the fun factor
